Do your LO's ever go into a trance? It sounds a daft question I know, but lately in the evening when she is having her last bottle, she has become a nightmare to feed. It's usually only on the last bottle. She struggles to latch on, her tongue constantly gets in the way or won't lay down in her mouth and she gets really frustrated with this. She then seems to go into a trance where she will be looking through me, not at me and goes a little floppy like she is asleep. Her eyes are wide open and occasionally she will smile as though she is dreaming about something nice. I can only describe it as a trance.
Does anyone else's LO do this? Part of me is actually worried....

Hi,

Reading your post reminds me of a medical condition which my dad suffers from - please don't be alarmed as I maybe totally wrong - and as always if you are concerned you should see your doctor but this sounds to me like epilepsy.

Most people think of epilepsy as an uncontrolable fitting issue but there are two types of epileptic seizures - the grand mal (physical fitting) and the petite mal which involves the patient coming under a trance like state - totally unresponsive. I have on a few occasions seen my dad have these types of attacks. He will sit motionless, not responsive at all - the only thing i have sometimes seen him do at the time is cry, totally soundless but with tears. Afterwards he will "come out" of it and be ok, just tierd.

Like I say, it maybe nothing, and i'm sorry if this worries or scares you but I though the information might help. Let me know how LO gets on. :hugs:

Does it happen every night? Maybe she is just tired? Lexi is like that sometimes, but I don't think it is something to worry about... she becomes like that when she is happy and satisfied and ready to nodd off..

My friends 8wk old baby does this at times, her gp checked her out and she is fine. Doesn't do any harm to get your LO checked out though if you are worried.

Lownthwaite: There are an awful lot more than 2 types of epileptic seizure! As far as I recall there are about 40 types (my LO has at least 4 different types)

my son does this all the time! he's 16 months now and still does it, the doctor said its normal and lots of babies do it :flower:

Really?! My dad got told there were 2! Doctors scare me sometimes with how much (or little!?) they know! Although he was diagnosed about 27 years ago (although i doubt the other 38 types have been recognised in the last 27 years!) :dohh: Thanks for the info :flower:

it's called seven-mile stare, that's when they are really tired and want to fall asleep, it's your sure sign to put them to bed still awake.

Yup, Max has two trances.
One when he's tired and has closed his eyes but opens them again for a minute or two and stares. Then one when he's wake. He just spaces out for a while and then rejoins the room

Isla goes into a trance just before she nods off to sleep. Its a sure sign that she's about to go and she does it particularly when she's falling asleep without a boob in her mouth!

yes thats exactly what was gunna say  maybe if shes having trouble feeding at this time why dont u try feedin a little earlier before she gets too tired .

Phew, glad others have experienced this!! Yes she has started to do it every night for the last 1-2 weeks. She is definitely overtired, I know that as she can't latch on to her bottle whereas when she is awake and happy she has no problems. She naps fine in the day but we can't get her to go down late afternoon so by the time she has her last bottle she is exhausted. The trance thing shook me up though - she does this funny little stare and smile and it does come across a little odd! xx

Evie does it when she is tired and nodding off.

She will have long blinks then have a glazed look and will stare thru you for about a min then more long blinks then she is asleep but the stare looks like she it wide awake lol

I'm sure your LO is fine but if you are worried go to your GP for piece of mind ;)

Yep, Ronan definitely does this when he's zoning out and ready for sleep.

I guess it's time to move her bed time a little earlier, try 20 minutes earlier at first. Good luck x
