I had my first prenatal appointment today and the doctor brought this up. I said no automatically cause he said people only get it done if they plan to abort if is positive. but after thinking about it I am not even close to ready to have a child with Down syndrome. I have no idea. Anyone else been through this confusion of not knowing what to do?

* I do not know yet whether I would keep it if I found out if was a high chance.

I didnt do it . I get what you're saying as far as not being ready to have a child with down syndrome - having a child with any disability would be such a difficult thing to do ... But i sat down and thought about it , and I'm willing to go through hell & high waters , so if it comes to it that my daughter has any problem ... I guess me and her are gonna have to figure out a way to deal with it .

most ppl who have children with down syndrome are over 35 and i am not having it done and children with special needs are not as hard as ppl think i have 2 special needs sisters it just takes love and patients pm me if you need to talk

I had the testing done but just so we'd sort of know what to expect iykwim? My OH has a few relatives with Downs so we just wanted to know, either way we knew we were going to keep the baby.

The only suggestion I have since you mention you don't know you'd keep the baby if he/she were to have higher chances of having Downs or something else is to make sure you know that those tests can be wrong.

I had it done, but I think it was done automatically and then they checked something on my 12 week scan. I don't remember them asking me do I wanna test it lol I might remember wrong, but I was then in Finland so maybe it's different there anyways.

unless you have risk factors, I wouldn't have it done; I didn't.. my little man even has (or had) an echogenic intracardiac focus, which can rarely be associated with down syndrome, and I still didn't have the testing done.

i said no automatically. the test can be wrong so many times!! i have heard people being told their baby would have downs and their children are perfectly fine!

Honestly I just got the NT Scan because I wanted another ultrasound, which that along with a blood test is part one and part two is just a blood test. Chances are at your age and if you havent had any close relatives with it that the results will come back in your favor. It is of no danger to them at all! If you do happen to get a higher result then theyll give you the option of an amnio which has a slight risk of miscarrirage. Cross that obstacle if you ever get to it

they did mine without even asking! they said they do it to everyone

mine came out perfectly fine<3 but either way I would've kept my little man!
he's my son I love him no matter what!

They are doing mine automatically. I still would choose to have it done because if their was something wrong I'd like to be as prepared as I could.

I've worried about it too. I am getting the NT scan done at 12 weeks and if everything looks normal there then I won't have any further testing. The amnio is invasive and I dont want to have that unless there appears to be other indicators. I have an uncle that ha severe chromosonal abnormalities as well as autism so it concerns me but I'm just telling myself the odds are on my side and to think positive.

I had mine done. Its very unlikely it will happen anyway but I know if I were to have a child with downs syndrome I'd need to be as prepared as possible to deal with it.

I had the down syndrome testing done. But, I don't think it's really fair of your doctor to tell you that everyone who has the test done does it because if it's a high change than they'll abort. I think that's a bit OTT. I got it done, not because I would've aborted but because I wanted to be prepared and learn as much as I could about having a child with down syndrome. Having a child with down syndrome isn't easy and I wanted to prepare myself. My LO was diagnosed with having a cleft lip at 24 weeks pregnant, so the doctor told me I should have the down syndrome testing done since there is sometimes a connection between cleft lips and down syndrome. I decided to have it done. When I got the results back I was thrilled to know that there was nothing else wrong with my LO rather than a cleft lip. Just do whatever you feel most comfortable doing. It sounds like you've made up your mind.

I said no when i first got asked about it but then i thought to myself if my child does have downsyndrome then i need to be prepared so i had the test done. My results came back as a 1 in 100 000 chance which is really low.
If it came back as 1 in 100 or anything i would not have had the other test done. I just wanted to be prepared, but i felt the same as you to start with xx

I had it done with both of mine. My cousin was 24 when my second cousin came along with downs. She was so mad at herself that she wasn't prepared and that she had declined the screening.

I would love my child (do love my children) no matter what but I think being prepared is the best level of love you can have. Termination has never been an option for me. Education on the other hand is crucial.

I declined it. I would love my child no matter what. :flower:

just because we had the test doesn't mean we wont love our child. i just wanted to be prepared x

I never said that? I stated why I didn't get the test. I have no problem with the test or those who get it.
Of course we all love our children! I just explained why I didn't get it. :flower:

Thank you ladies for all of your responses. I believe. My chances are very low and I would not want to give up the baby either way. Just the way the doctor described it seemed like anyone who did it did not keep the child if it was a high risk. I hope I did not upset anyone with this question and thank you all for your information on it.

The little test is nothing, really. They just take a sample of the blood they already are going to take from you and test it. I had it done because like other people, I'd like to prepare myself as best as I could.
