Right now maybe it's just the way I'm doing things but I seriously think I'm doing it right - I have the avent steam sterliser and put dr browns bottles in normally but when it's finished the brown bits (which I have started soaking in boiling water instead of sterlising due to this problem) sort of flake if you like and I get loads of brown bits inside the screw on bits even though I've started boiling them instead of sterlising.

Anybody else have this problem or similar or just me?

I have used the same bottles and same steriliser together.

It sounds like there is a build up of something either on the bottle components or the steriliser. I think you need to do two things. First, give the steriliser a good clean - if it has limescale that doesn't wipe off, get a descaler suitable for sterilisers - I've seen them in boots.

The other thing is to give the bottles a thorough clean. If you have a dishwasher, put it all through on the top rack - you can do this every time if you want. If not, soak it all in hot soapy water then give it a good scrub with brushes - a normal bottle brush on the big stuff, and get the little brush into the brown bit. You need to do it in two directions - straight into the middle first, then through the side so it pokes out the other side. Then go round all the spokes of it. I think some milk has dried on it at some point, and I reckon it's that that is peeling. Try giving the bottle a rinse out if you aren't washing it straight after use each time, and that should help too.
