Seem a stupid question but, what does mean dream feed?

A dreamfeed is when you pick them up while they are asleep and give them a bottle. I usually wake Joe up a little bit before, as I personally feel better about giving him the bottle then he is awake (so probably not even a dreamfeed!). The pop them back into their cot afterwards and they go back to sleep.

When Joe was younger we did this before we went to bed, inplace of him waking up for a feed, so we got a bit more sleep before he woke again.

Hope that helps x

Dream feeding is where you feed baby either while they are asleep or you wake them only slightly. Most babies will eat while asleep/drowsy and it means that they don't need as much settling back to sleep.

I DF my LO at 11pm (ish) at night. He goes down for the night at 7.30, and without a DF would wake at about 3am for a feed. With it, he will happily stay down until 6am, and wont need a bottle until 8am. It's a handy way of adding an extra feed into the day, and also encourages them to sleep for a larger block at night (allowing you to get some much needed rest as once they're fed, you know that they will sleep for a while, and so can you!)

A lot of people do this, but there is also a technique that the baby whisperer recommends called 'tanking up' where you offer more feeds in the run up to bed time - sort of mimics the natural cluster feeding behaviour that a lot of babies do, which fills them up with a store of food and calories to get them to sleep for longer.

I used to 'tank up' with my LO, then his night feeds started to creep forwards eventually ending up at midnight when he was 3 months, which was just silly as we were going to bed then woken 1 hour later. I tried a DF and it worked to keep him down for the majority of the night, even during growth spurts etc.

Aaaah, ok :) that is clear now. I'll try it
Thanks :)

I just posted in the baby club asking about dream feeding too :)

May I ask, my little man is almost 4 weeks and is waking every 3hrs around the clock for a bottle (drinking up to 130 mls!!). I cant see how dream feeding could be possible without feeding him wayyy too frequently and wayyy too much? Is he still too young to introduce dream feeding??

My Oliver is the same, almost 4 weeks :) and waking up every 3h like he has a clock in his head hihi
He used to take 120ml, for a couple of times i tried even 150ml! then he slept 4 h. But i've been told in hospital that i overfed him! and should reduce to 75ml. Ha! good to say when he's not actepting that at all... I give him again 120ml

Ignore the whole 'overfeeding' thing. How would they like it if you came in while they were eating their lunch and said 'Nope, sorry, that's too much, you only need half of that!'. That's essentially what they're asking you to do to your LO by rationing them. If a baby is eating too much, they'll be sick as their stomachs just wont hold any more than they are able to handle in one go. Personally, I would feed on demand and let him figure out what he wants, when.

How did the Dream feeding go?

No such thing I'm afraid. Most babies will only eat when they are hungry. If LO doesn't want the dream feed they just wont accept the bottle/breast to drink from. Prime example with Earl last night. Most nights he'll inhale 7.5oz on his dream feed. Yesterday however he had a large tea (we had missed breakfast due to a Dr's appointment) and he was sleepy due to jabs. Hubby went to give him his dreamfeed. I'd said to expect about 7oz.....after 1oz, he spat the bottle out and would not take any more. Hubby sat with him for 5, tried again, still nothing. So put him back down and he slept through til 6.30 and had his first bottle at 8am as normal. He just didn't need it, so didn't drink it. These babies are far better at judging their own needs than even we are, and certainly more so than a Dr who doesn't know them.

I didn't try yet, for now i try to figure out what makes him vomiting. I give him gaviscon and seems to get better, but still occasionally he is vomiting with a great power :/

Heya Maajka... My little man was born on 6th March and is also called Oliver!! I love that name!!!

There is so much conflicting advice about over-feeding. We had a little break through last night...I am now offering 150 mls in each bottle and Olly is usually taking about 130 mls. We started this last night, as well as keeping formula just for night time (keeping expressed breast milk for day time) and Olly went 5hrs between feeds!! I couldn't believe it and loved the extra sleep!! Will be doing the same tonight to see if we can repeat it. Once we can regularly stretch out his feeds, I might try doing a dream feed :flower:

I can't imagine only giving him 75mls!

Thanks!! It is so confusing....many people and professionals keep telling me you cant over feed and they will throw it up...but every where in print I keep reading you CA~N over feed if you are on formula (but not on breast milk).

I was stressing about it this week but the health visitor reckons bubs is still a little behind on his weight (as we had feeding problems in the first few weeks) so now I think I will feed him what he wants and try not to worry until his weight looks like it could be a problem :flower:
