Due to start 1st IUI, would like to hear your successes or failed attempts?

So even though im still late i am getting myself ready for IUI a week on monday therefore i was wondering if the girls that have had IUI would mind sharing the IUI success or failed attempts with me. I am not sure of the success rates of IUI as i havent done much reading on it yet.

I don't know myself but I am curious as well. I have my first appt with FS in Sept and I think that IUI is definately our next step.

Hi Hayley

I have just finished my first (failed) IUI and this is my experience:

Stage 1: Anytime from CD1 to CD5 (6 is too late) go to the clinic and have a scan to see how thick the lining is and measure follicle size before stating treatment.
Stage 2: Get given Gonal injection pen pre loaded with 6 shots of the drug to be self administered daily from CD5 to 10 at least. Its easy to use, doesn't hurt and has no side effects (woo hoo). THis stage can also be done with clomid or with no drugs at all.
Stage 3: Back to the clinic day 5 for a scan to measure lining and follicles then on with the injections until CD12 if needed to help the follicles grow. Was given ovatrelle to take home and inject ,yself with 36 hours prior to IUI appointment.
Stage 4: Go to appointment with DH and his sample. Leave it with the lab for washing and preparing which takes an hour then up on the bed on the bed for the insemmination.
The procedure is simple, they use the same thing as a smear test then insert a catheter straight into the womb to inject the washed semen.
Stage 5: Lie down for 15 minutes then wait for 2 weeks.
Stage 6: Nurse told me AF was due 14 days after the shot which was the Weds but I actually came on on the SAturday which was 15 days after the IUI so got my hopes up unnecessarily.
Stage 7: Had the most painful period of my life ever. Thought I was being punched from the inside and felt sick for about 12 hours. I thought I was going to die!

Any way, that was cycle one and I'm now on day 2 of the injections for cycle 2.

IT smarts a bit but nowhere near as bad as the HSG thingey - that hurt loads more!

thanks hun, was just wondering if it's like a smear kind of pain seeing as it's passing through the cervix. ouch a bit!

sorry to hear of your BFN, thanks very much for that post, it answers alot. i assumed that IUI would just be clomid and then them inserting the sperm, i didnt realise it involved injections aswell. are the definate or does it depend on your follicles? i have been on clomid and have always had good sized follicles.

I'm really not sure about which drugs they will give you. I too responded well to clomid in terms of follicles and ovulating but they put me on the Gonal. I think it is more expensive but more effective? I;ve had mine done on the NHS but the price list on the wall had a price for Gonal, Clomid and no drugs. The Gonal has no side effects because it works directly on the ovaries where as clomid works on the brain to produce hormones and gives you side effects. Don't worry about the injections, they are really easy to administer and don't hurt at all. Tiny weeney little needle and a pre- loaded pen.

I think the price list at my clinic said about £600 but don't quote me! I;ve had mine on NHS so really don't know...

Hi Ladies,

My IUI process was a little different. I took Clomid 100mg from day 3 to 7 and then was told to take opks starting day 10. The day after my +ve, DH had his spermies washed and they put the catheter in (which didn't hurt at all- and i have a very low pain tolerance) and I layed there for 5 minutes and was told to go about my regular day. The whole procedure (incl. Clomid, sperm washing and deposit) was under $500.

that IUI was not successful, but I also had the worst period ever...to me it was like my last miscarraige with tissue (sorry tmi), but all blood tests showed negative for pregancy.

I will be starting my next IUI cycle in about 8 days.

our appointment is 27th july, a week on monday. this is my first month of clomid for 9 months and im on cycle day 38!!! so annoyed that she has done a dissapearing act again!

I took OPKS and called my DR when I got my +, I went in the next day for the IUI, and waited to test.
It was painless when my OB did it, when someone had to do it for him one month, it hurt, but I Think I was probably tense about it too.

twinmom why did you decide to keep doing IUI that long if it didn't work the first 7 times? I wonder cause they tell us in canada that if it didn't work after 3 it was unlikely to... I mean obviously yours did which is great.

In canada it is 250 a cycle not including any meds but clomid is covered out here not the gonal shots though. I think when we do it we're going straight for the gonal shots and trigger. I have never been on clomid before though either. I just want to start with the one that will give me the best results and more eggs.

Keepingfaith and milsney sorry if I spelled that wrong but how many follicles did you get from your meds?

I have a much different story. Our first IUI was with 150ml of clomid from day 3 - 7. I had an U/S on day 11 and there was only one follicle. They preformed an U/S everyday there after till the follicle was above 20mm. I was then given a HCG shot and the IUI was preformed 36 hours later( not painful at all..just like a pap). This cycle was a BFN but my period was very light ( I had worst bleeding taking the clomid then my cycle after the IUI). My second IUI ,I was give 150ml of clomid from day 3-7 and Pergeon pen 75ml from day 5-10. I had 7 follicles( 3 big and 4 smaller) all were above 18mm the biggest was 21mm. On day 12 I was given a HSG shot but this time we chose to do two IUI's one 30 hrs later and the second 15 hrs after that. I was given Progestrone suppositories (spelling?) for which I used everyday. I got my BFP 12 days later. Now the cost for me in Ontario Canada was:
clomid - $60
pergeon pen - $375
U/S and blood work - covered by OHIP
HSG shot - $80
First IUI with sperm wash - $475 per cycle
Second IUI with sperm wash - $175 same cycle
Progestrone suppositories - $2 per tablet ( needed 2 tables everyday till 12 weeks pregnant for negitive pregnancy result)

I had my first U/S at six weeks and everything looks good and only one embryo.
