Early scans...

Hiya girls, I was just thinking, I really think an early scan would help me to stop worrying about the baby! Do they just give you early scans if you've had losses, or do you have to ask? I have a doctors appointment today at 1, so could ask him then I suppose! Also, what is the earliest you have heard of or been for a scan?

From what I've been told, you get one about 8-9 weeks if you have had a loss? I would love a definite answer and I guess I will find out at the DR's tomorrow. We are around the same length into it so feel free to drop a message if you want to chat.

I had 5 losses and my clinic started my scan just before 6 weeks. They said before then they don't see very much. I think as early as you are they wouldn't see anything. I had blood draws every two days for a couple of weeks before I started getting my weekly scans. That way i could at least know my hcg was doubling and that helped me believe things were heading in a good direction. Maybe they could offer you a few more blood tests than is usual to put you mind at ease.

I think it depends on the hospital really. i had to ask for an early scan as have had 2 mcs. I had been getting severe cramping at 5 weeks and they wouldn't scan me at that stage as they said it was too early, but they scanned me at 6 weeks and 3 days. My GP said she would recommend an early scan anyway but as I had got that scan my date for first scan came through as when I'll be 12 weeks. I think you have to keep asking them but some hospitals might operate differently.

The doctor said the midwives should get in touch with me pretty soon and organise my scans, so hopefully that'll be about 7 weeks (I knew I'd be too early now, I just want a scan about 7-8w so we can see something lol)

Hi ive had 2 mmc, the last one in nov 2011 and i had a plan set for me ........

start aspirin 75mg the day i find out im pg
scan at 6weeks to find heartbeat
progesterone supp at 6 weeks
scan every 2 weeks from 6 weeks onwards to keep an eye on baby

I found out 2 days ago that i am expecting again!!!!!!! Im 4 weeks on friday so have found out very early but hope this is good, ive started my aspirin and my scan lady has already contacted me to arrange my 6weeks scan x

See...they just said to me that since I've had only 2 that it's just down to chance, and I shouldn't need any extra scans...hmmm...

I think its also because im 38 in march so i dont really have too much time on my side to wait like someone in their 20s???? I saw the consultant last week after i was referred in december and he was very good at putting the plan together and said i would be under his care at the epau as soon as i was pregnant again, i didnt know at the time that i was going to get a pg test positve this week, im not due on till tomorrow!! But my tests are all positve!

That is actually quite a good idea lol! I'm pretty sure everything is fine, it's just a worry with the previous M/Cs...and I can be a worrier!

Ahh, it's so horrible these early weeks, with my first and second pregnancies, I was so happy at the beginning, and all through with my first, and up until the miscarriage on the second!

I have one CB digi left, and since I lost my other two babies at 5w0d on both accounts, I think I'll be loads better when I'm past then, I think I'll test when the CB is supposed to say 3+ so in 2 weeks. Then I think I'll feel happier too!

You are not considered to have a problem with MC unless you have had three. Bjt do you have an EPU near you or at your local hospital?

Many people think EPUs are just there for bleeding, pain or recurrant MCs but the aim of all of them eventually is to scan everyone early so they can check for ectopics (so no one is missed and ends up having bad consequences), can pick up women who are vulnerable, like older women, women with medical issues, etc and purely for dating so antenatal can be organized.

I am lucky in that i have a good one near me. I have already had three scans and the MWs tell me to go whenever there is problem. And instead of seeing MWs i will be under the obstetrician instead due to many MC in the past.

See if you have a local EPU honey. And give them call if you do. I am sure they will be lovely and happy to help you

But believe me, an early scan makes no difference as you only want one everyday after that!

Try and wait till after 7 weeks if you can so that the heart beat can be seen. Chances of MC after a heartbeat is seen and if an expected rate is seen are much reduced after that
