Hi!

Is it possible to be 20 weeks pregnant with an abdominal ectopic pregnancy and not know, as in no positive test and a 'clear' ultrasound?

May sound daft but im just curious x

No. A 20 week baby is generally around 12 ounces and could in no way, shape or form be inside your fallopian tube without it rupturing. On top of that, the fallopian tube cannot sustain a baby's life for very long, and certainly not for 20 weeks. Why do you ask?

No.

The baby would still be seen by ultrasound. Your not gonna miss a baby of that size with an ultrasound even if they have implanted outside the uterus.

The pregnancy would still produce hCG that would be picked up on a pregnancy test.

Ofc chances are that with an undetected abdominal pregnancy you would haemorrhage much earlier than 20 weeks, baby would die and you'd be at serious risk of death as well.

While rare and extremely life threatening it has happend and actually happend to a women in 2012!
The following is from a reputable news source here in the US.

Miracle Baby Born During Rare ‘Abdominal Pregnancy’

Credit CBS 2NEW YORK(CBSNewYork)*— A Staten Island woman recently gave birth to a*miracle baby. The newborn developed in her abdomen instead of her womb. The baby and her mother made medical history three months ago when they showed up at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island for what was supposed to be a routine c-section.But, Dr Michael Moretti told CBS 2′s Dr Max Gomez that when Sylvia Ortiz arrived for the procedure she had a surprise in store for him.“It was an abdominal pregnancy, or a rupture in the uterus with a large opening in its cavity,” he explained. This happens when the embryo escapes the fallopian tubes and lodges itself in the mother’s abdomen. The embryo grows on the abdomen wall, outside of the uterus, and can cause major trouble for the mother.“The risks would be catastrophic bleeding, massive bleeding from the big blood vessels, and the placenta area in the abdomen. It could cause shock, organ damage, and death from hemorrhage,” he said.A team of doctors and nurses were assembled, and during the procedure Sylvia lost nearly all of her blood volume. It took forty units of blood, and two operations, over a course of twenty-four hours to control the bleeding. Sylvia didn’t wake up for three days.

An ultrasound would be able to identify whether the baby is inside the uterus or not though, so it would seem that the lady in the story must not have had any ultrasounds, and is VERY lucky to be alive!

Hi,

I've known of a person who almost died at 20 weeks pregnant, it was ectopic, not in the tube obviously, I think it was partially in uterus and entrance to tube maybe but I'm not sure, the entire time it looked like it was in the uterus to the medical teams, the person had severe pain the entire pregnancy, then was rushed to a and e with barely a pulse and almost died, this happened this year! The lady complained the entire time she was in severe pain

It's extreeeeeee mmmmly rare though, rarely does an ectopic go beyond 8 weeks

In reference to the first question, you would most definitely not have a clear ultrasound that far on!! You would see a mass or foetal tissue or a baby beyond that point and still have HCG as a pp mentioned

i seen that story as she did have ultrasounds and they missed the baby growing right outside the uterous...very very very rare

its phenomenal hearing these stories! while modern medicine and technology is amazing it seems these things do still happen...mind blowing...

adding the one im talking about she was pregnant with frat twins one was in the tube and one uterus....so they dealt with the one in the tube and hoped for the best...in the end during labor they found another outside the uterus on abdominal wall...

very weird lol

so it would have been fraternal tripplets an not by medical intervention
