This will probably be long and slightly jumbled as I don't remember all that much about my labour or birth except the pain!
I woke up on Monday 15th about 10am with some pains coming every 15-20 mins for a few hours. I wasn't actually too hopeful but thought I'd go for a walk and see what happened. Whilst I was walking they continued, but they didn't really hurt at all, just felt like period pains. Then I came home and sat down for an hour or two and they disappeared so I went for another walk about 4pm. Got the pains while walking but again, disappeared once I got home and had a shower and a lie down. I got up to make dinner about 7pm and starting getting the pain and tightening again every 10 mins or so while I was stood up.
Then when I sat down they carried on, coming every 10-15 mins and lasting about 40 seconds. At about 11pm I called the hospital and told them I thought I might have gone into labour. As I was high risk I was told to come in and be put on CTG to check how things were going but would prob be sent home. I arrived and was put on monitor for about half an hour. Showed I was contracting regularly but not very strong although things were getting a bit sore by now. Was given paracetamol as a suppository and sent home.
At home I then got in the bath and the pains were pretty sore by this point. I was arching my back to try and help but at this stage I still wasn't too bad. They were coming every 4 mins lasting almost a minute so OH rang the hospital back about 3am who told me to go back in. I did and got a cow of a MW who said "you don't look in labour to me", by this stage I was really starting to hurt so that annoyed me. Got put back on the monitors and showed they were still regular and getting stronger but not lasting that long. She said she'd examine me, which she did and said I was only 1cm and cervix still high. At this point I started to because I was in pain and my body was getting no where.
Came home and got into bed to try and rest, but I was in way too much pain to do anything except lie there and moan and swear My OH was amazing, rubbing my back and doing all he could. I told him he may as well get some rest as we could be like this for days and he'd need energy so I came downstairs and logged on here to try and distract me. Contractions were every 6-7 mins lasting 50 secs at this point. Then things really stepped up and I was moaning and groaning like mad and crying with the pain and tiredness as I'd not slept.
It was about this stage I started to throw up, I was violently sick about 4 times in the next 2 hours. My mum came round to help OH cope with me about 9am ish. I was in agony by this point. Absolutely horrendous... screaming, crying, swearing, hyperventilating, everything. I don't remember anything from here except the pain. At some stage my OH rang the hospital back saying contractions now every 4 mins lasting over a minute and they said go back in. I remember the clock in the car on the way saying 1.11pm.
I was examined pretty much as soon as I got there and was found to be 4-5cm. At this point I started grinning like a loony because it meant I was established and could have pain relief. The MW got me hooked up to the G&A within about 5 minutes and at first it was great. Contractions still hurt but I was happy in between. I was put on the monitors though and they weren't too happy so I had to stay on the monitors my entire labour meaning I couldn't move around at all. Then things got really really painful and the MW noticed that I was starting to make noises as if I was pushing (I wasn't consciously, but my body was). I was examined again and found to be 7-8cm, I think this was about 3.30pm ish. My waters went as the MW was examining me, they exploded all over her, all over my legs and my socks and the bed. It was quite amusing, I remember smiling. I couldn't stop my body pushing so the MW suggested pethidine to take the urge away as I was at risk of making my cervix swell meaning I would have needed a C-Section. I was in so much pain they could have suggested anything and I'd agree. I had the pethidine then and immediately wished I hadn't. I felt so out of it, I kept pretty much falling asleep between contractions making them seem so much scarier and more painful when I woke again.
At 4.40pm I started making pushing noises again so was re-examined and found to be fully dilated. I was asked at this stage if a nurse from somewhere else could come in to watch my delivery to which I replied "I couldn't give a shit who you let in" Apparently when she came in the room I apologised to her for swearing when they asked. I started pushing then, this stage was horrendous. My contractions all but disappeared, they got really short so I could only give 2 small pushes with each contraction. I also wasn't pushing right I don't think because I was so stoned on pethidine. I was pushing for 40 minutes and things were starting to get worse, LOs heartbeat kept dropping and I was getting exhausted. The MW gave me an injection of local aneasthetic into my perineum to help me push against the pain better. After this I pushed really hard and managed to push out his head but the MW couldn't wriggle the rest of him out so his head was just hanging there for about 2 minutes. Weirdest feeling ever. Then with my next push he was out and put directly on my chest. He had the cord around his neck but he started to cry after 1 minute. His apgar score was 10 at 1 minute and 10 again at 10 minutes
The MW told me afterwards I did really well to get him out as he was actually stuck and with being so small his head kept slipping back up so apparently I was very lucky to avoid an assisted delivery.
He was then weighed, he was 5lb 13ozs. I tore and had to have stitches done by the specialist because of how I'd torn. I had stitches in my perineum, and my inner labia tore in two So had to have that stitched back together again. The stitches weren't too bad, the local anaesthetic going in was the worst but they gave me my G&A back for it.
To summarise, it was hell but I'd do it again tomorrow for my little boy. I do feel that it ruined my first day or two with him though, because I was so disappointed in myself for not pushing him out better.
