Birth story
Thursday April 12th I had a routine midwife appointment and my urine test came up with a +++ for protein & raised blood pressure so she sent me off to the triage ward of the mat unit for bloods and monitoring for pre-eclampsia. *Off i went. *They did all that and wanted me back on Sunday to continue testing. On Friday I met colleagues from work for my leaving meal as it was supposed to be my last day at work, even though I hadn't been in for two weeks due to back pain. We had a lovely Indian meal and I got some lovely gifts and vouchers etc.*
Sunday I went back to the triage ward and my BP *was raised further, so they admitted me to the antenatal inpatient ward to try to control it. *They mentioned possibly inducing me early due to the pre eclampsia and did an internal check and sweep to see how favourable my cervix was incase they did induce. I was 2cm dialated and 100% effaced. So I went to the ward and I was there for two nights while the adjusted my medication and continued monitoring. I had a consultant appointment on the Wednesday anyway that had been booked at my 20 week scan so I was back to the hospital the next day for that. I also had a growth scan and it said aprox 9 lbs 2 oz!! I was PETRIFIED that I was still a fair way off my due date and had a massive baby! As soon as the consultant came in I started crying lol. What a baby. He said that all things considered, the OC, the pre eclampsia etc, they would induce Friday 20/04/2012! He told me to go home, get everything sorted, get some good rest, and call @ 8 am Friday!!! Had another sweep, still 2cm.*
So Friday I call at 8am and I'm told no free beds, afternoon update was the same. Saturday same. Sunday, they call and said come in at 3:30, the induction room is free, let's get you started!
So in we went and at about 5:30 they inserted the first gel capsule on my cervix and told me to lay down for an hour and then walk around the hospital for an hour. The contractions started on that walk and I really didn't like it! I felt very vulnerable and "in danger" as we did a circular tour. They'd said walk for an hour but there's no way I could have walked for one hour. Maybe around the induction room, but not away from it.*
At about 8pm they sent OH home as I wasn't in established labour. Actually they didn't know if I was or not as they refused to examine me until 11:20. I asked if they could do it early so that OH wouldn't have to go home then come straight back but they wouldn't. I tell her I'm contracting now so I can tell something's going on but she doesn't really believe me.*
OH goes home, I spend the next couple of hours on the yoga ball breathing through the contractions and listening to glee on my iPod. The worst times were went I had to pee and had a contraction whilst on the toilet. Not nice.*
11:20 comes, I'm examined, what do you know, Im in established labour! She looks at the monitor and says "oh, you are having contractions" "yesss, i knowwww" i reply, catherine Tate style. *They tell me I can call OH back but I chose not to as he's better off sleeping at home through the boring times and it will be hours before we get to the exciting part!
I move from the induction room to delivery room 11 and ask for an epidural. At 1:40 my epidural is administered and ahhhhhhh no more contractions. I was worried about the cannula and spinal but really they were fine. So the next few hours are just slow and pain free. I'm laying there enjoying the epidural and nina (my MW) drinks coffee and we chat. Now, looking back, I don't really remember any of the finer details etc. maybe I dozed off a bit but I don't think so due to all the bleeps. In my head the room I was in at night and the room in the day are different, but they weren't. The night is a bit dream like to me, they broke my water at some point which was fine, didn't hurt and I just felt a bit warm for a minute or two. Like in a warm bath.*
At 8 I decided its time to call OH back, he's had enough rest and im bored! it's around this time something happens to my epidural and the contractions *are coming back so I feel like I need his support. I call him back and he arrives just as they're figuring out that my epidural tube has unplugged! The part that goes over your shoulder. Those contractions were intense! Nina kept getting me to roll over and change positions for the monitor and we think it came open then. But they sorted it. Some back pain remained as the baby had turned herself back to back. Thanks baby!
At some point the midwives change shift and a lady called April comes to look after me. Wait I think this happened before OH came back. Anyways April was super nice and did a great job of looking after me.*
Nothing very interesting happened for a long while, I kept a friend at work up to date with emails, talked to OH and April, etc until it was time to push, around 3pm. Oh I had pitocin through my IV near the end as well as they said my contractions were a bit rubbish. *I was really dreading the pushing stage. It made me so nervous. It was INTENSE and I felt like all the pressure from pushing was making my brain explode. It's so true though that in the moment you don't care what you do or say or look like lol. They stopped topping up mu epidural so i was getting contrsctions again and the back
To back was hurting my back on the right side. *After 1 hr 45 mins of pushing her head was finally right there and I had an episiotomy, she was born on the next push @ 1757. When they lifted her out she looked so massive and purple and swollen that I was a bit shocked. I think I stayed shocked for a while! I think we delayed cutting the cord, which OH did. They weighed her and gave her the Vit k jab and gave me the jab to deliver the placenta. They said my placenta was massive and my cord was really thick. Ok. She didn't really cry, just grizzled a little. We tried nursing straight away and I think it worked. It's all a bit of a blur.*
At about 9pm they sent OH home and two ladies with a bucket of soapy water came in and washed me, and pushed me to the ward. We stay two nights on the ward. I should have had a blood transfusion but they bust the veins in my hand 3 times and I just can't take any more. Im exhausted and miss OH and need to be at home.*
All in all my induction experience was a positive one. I never got to a point where the pain was so bad I wanted to die, it was all controlled and the staff were great! Today 25/05/12 she is finally back to birth weight after losing a pound after birth.
