I had my DD in September 12 by EMCS (she turned her head and my contractions slowed right down). All went well with my section and DD was fine, I however got an infection a few hours into recovery and was very ill for 48 hours after and was in the high dependency unit for a night.

This time round I have no idea whether I can go for a VBAC or will have to have a elective C Section. Obviously I will discuss with midwife once I see her as I am only 5 weeks. Part of me wants a elective as I know what to expect, my labour wasn't exactly traumatic but the events after were (I had to go back to theatre and was on my own for 2 days without my baby)

Just wondering if any other ladies were ok during the section but fell ill after and what they did 2nd time round?

Thanks

C

I had an emcs and had to have an operation after due to a big tear. Before I left hospital the consultant was very clear that I would have tohave a ssection if I got pregnant again and reiterated this when I saw him 6 weeks later. This time I booked in with my midwife she booked me a consultant app at 20 week's which I think is standard in UK if you've had a section before. Hopefully you will be able to discuss all options and have the birth you choose after you've got all the medical info. Good luck.

You'll be referred for a consultant appointment at around 20 weeks. They'll discuss your previous case (they should have your hospital records there from last time) and talk to you about what you want, the pros and cons of VBAC vs section, and it'll be applied to your individual case. Whatever is said in that conversation, the current nhs standing means it is YOUR choice and you'll be allowed to either have a section or VBAC.

I'm having an elective section after an emergency one last time. I'd rather not but after weighing up all the factors it's the best option for me. So it's well worth talking through your case with the doctor.

PS congratulations on your pregnancy!

Sorry I didn't really comment on the being ill afterwards part. I didn't have an infection but I was very ill with hellp syndrome, which amongst other things causes a drop in blood platelets - you need platelets to heal so I was put on strong antibiotics as soon as I went to theatre. Given your infection last time they might put you on antibiotics as a preventative measure if you have a section.

I had an emcs with my daughter, and was 15 days over due..The hospital I'm delivering this one at does not allow VBAC's. Though I heard in most places you can after a certain amount of time. BUT I'm fine with another c-section! I was actually happy with it because I was induced and my water broken before,so I have no real idea what a vaginal birth would be like!! Good Luck & Hope you get to do the type of birth you want!!

I didn't have any illness as such after my c section, I did have an infection of my scar but nowhere near like what you went through.
But I am pregnant with number 2 and just had my consultant appointment who basically said that it was my choice but he was pushing vbac (which i think most uk hospitals will unless there's a clear reason not to). By the sound of your labour they will probably say vbac is possible and encourage you to do it. You can refuse induction though if you go too far over as well which is what I am doing, as I think it increases the risk of rupture too much. Also the consultant said that I wouldn't be left for hours and hours/days in labour, as the longer you are contracting the more it increases the risk of rupture so if I don't progress they will discuss taking me for a c section too.
