So on Tuesday 23 July at around 3 am I start having these pains. They were period like pains but quite mild. They kept me up until about 10 am then I fell asleep until 3pm and when I woke up they were virtually gone. I had dinner with my husband and I was fine, bouncing up and down the birthing ball and having a laugh. It was very mild pain at that point.

So we went to bed at about midnight and then at around 3 am again the pain started. This time stronger. No sign of my waters or plug... I couldn't sleep and the pain was getting worse and worse. I decided to get up and run a bath. I was in the bath for about 2 hours, and by the time I came out - I had to scream to wake Steve (my husband) up so he could help me out - the contractions were coming every 10 mnts... then I had a couple of hours of trying to sleep. I had already taken 2 paracetamol tablets... A couple of hours afterwards I was screaming with every contraction. My husband called the midwife and she heard me through one of my contractions, she told me it is probably quite early to go to the hospital and she asked me how far along the contractions were. I had no idea, the pain was soo intense I was not sure. I said at about every 6 minutes. She said 'OK, give us a call back when they start coming every 4 minutes' so me and my husband started timing it. It was already evry 3 minutes, 2 and a half minutes so I called them back and I said to them this is it. They told me to come in then. It took me ages to get ready, as I was in pain. I had to put some extra clothes and stuff in the hospital bag. THat alone took me about an hour lol.... with several aborted attempts!

Anyway, we got to the hospital - which is about 10 mnts away in the car - and I had some contractions on the way there - I was screaming with pain! We got there and it took us ages to park the car cause it was sooo busy, I was having my contractions and screaming as they came... Anyway we got into the maternity unit and asked the receptionist where to go - she showed us and it was this small place where women get triaged before they go into the ward. As soon as we got there my contractions stopped...! I got checked and I was ONLY 2 cm dilated. I was raging...! I couldn't believe that all that pain had translated into 2cm.... rrgghhhh....

They told me to come back in a few hours so that they could check on the progress. After we got back in the house I was hungry, but the contractions started again. They were quite painful. My husband popped out to go to the post office quickly and he said that he could hear me scream from several a couple blocks away heheh

Anyway, my husband insisted in us going back to the hospital as it was too painful to watch. We got everything ready and went again.

I got in and the lady checked me again - it was the same lady - I was 4cm this time - I said I couldn't take the pain anymore - she asked me if my waters or plug had come off - nope - nothing had come off at that point! Actually my waters never broke and my plug came off just before her head... with a tiny bit of water afterwards, but never lots of it, so if I were to be guided by that then I would have never been in labour!

Anyway, they gave me some gas and air which I took straight away - I could feel myself getting numb, my fingertips were numb and I felt like I was in a different dimension - it did the trick! We went up to the Home from Home unit and got a lovely room, with a big birthing pool, a toilet and a bed. We settled in and I got some more Gas and Air. The midwife came around and introduced herself. She was excellent. She filled up the birthing pool and said it would be better to stay in the bed for a while until I was more dilated. I was in the bed I think for about an hour. Then we moved into the pool - Gosh that was the hardest part - the pain was soooo intense, I wasn-t even having any Gas and Air as I couldn-t do anything anymore. The midwife was coming and going into the room every now and then. I don't know how often as I was completely out of it. After a few hours she gave me Co-codamol - 2 tablets - and even after that I was screaming in pain. Another 2 hours went by and the midwife asked me if I wanted to come out of the pool. I said yes, she knew I was in too much pain and the birthing pool wasn't really helping anymore.

Then I laid in the bed and got more Gas and Air. She checked me and I was 6cm dilated this time. She offered me an injection of diamorphine soon after - I accepted it - it helped speed things up. I don-t remember much after that as apparently I was very quiet for about an hour / this was when the injection was kicking in - after that I remember really strong pain and me screaming a lot. I remember my midwife going saying she had finished her shift and we got another midwife in. I was very close then but I thought it was never going to end...!

So after another hour of really strong pain I felt some water come out - I also felt the plug soon after (or maybe it was just before?) that followed by a strong urge to push. I was soooo tired. The midwife said - I can see the head - and soon after there was a huge urge to push. I screamed ' I CANT DO THIS TAKE HER OUT, JUST TAKE HER THE F*** OUT!!!' my eyes were apparenytly rolling and I was completely out of it - I tried to seat on the baby-s head - the midwife started screaming at me saying I was doing dangerous things to me and my baby but the pain was SOOO INTENSE, SOOO STRONG. I screamed back begging her to use something to take the baby out. I was in so much pain. The effect of the diamorphine had gone...

Even without much effort I could feel the head come closer and closer, and I started to feel the ring of fire - it was so sore but I knew it was close and the only way for it to end would be to push her out - don-t get me wrong but the pain was so intense that I wasn't thinking about the baby-s well being as much as I should - I wasn't thinking about anything. I couldn't. So I started to push, once, I screamed again 'I CANT DO IT, IM GONNA DIE' and I stopped pushing and felt her head going back and the midwife said 'It's very close, just push again at the next contraction' and as soon as the urge came again I pushed as hard as I could, one two three , I think it was a total of 8 times until they managed to take the rest of her out! They placed her on top of me and the pain just vanished, almost entirely. They gave me an injection to deliver the placenta as I had lost too much blood and couldn't risk losing any more.

I looked at her in disbelief, she was there, she cried straight away. She was soo tiny. My husband was mesmerised. He told me later he almost fainted at that point, he had a little tear in his eye. I never cried... I'm such a cold fish! The baby peed on me and soon after I fed her. She latched on really well for a few minutes.

They took her away to weigh her and measure her and my husband went out to get her hospital bag from the car. The placenta came almost straight after the baby and I got my stitches. It was very sore so I got some more Gas and Air. It was a total of 4 stiches on each side plus a few more internal stiches.

We decided to call the baby Emily Abigail. She was 6lb 6, 51cm tall, with lots of dark hair.

The recovery has been difficult and it's taking longer than I expected but I can now walk again! We stayed at the hospital for 2 nights, in that same room, and my husband slept in the foldable bed in the room with us.

I know it is the miracle of life, but I am a little bit traumatised by it all. I don't think that, after that, I will want any more children. Mind you I used to want 7 kids lol.... If I ever dare to fall pregnant again I'm going straight to the epidural... I am 5'3'' so not very big but still I know so many people who are smaller than me and managed to give birth to bigger babies without a problem, I still don't understand why it was so sore and why I had that many amount of stiches...

Anyway, she is here now and we're both so happy to have her! I'm still breastfeeding, she's only 2 weeks old but it doesn't hurt anymore. I just do it and I don't even bother with cream anymore.

I wish you all a happy birth, better than mine anyway!

xx

Oh I forgot to mention that she was born on 24 July at 10.43pm. ...! I don't know how we're meant to count labour hours but 1st contraction was on Tuesday 23 July at 3am.

Congrats, sounds similar to my 1st birth.
I handled my 2nd so much better and it honestly was much easier :)

Hi!

I am glad the 2nd one was easier. I have been to the doctor for my 6 week review in the meantime, and she told me that next time I should have a caesarean, as my frame is quite small (I'm 5'3'') and quite thin, and my husband is 6'7''. I don't think I will ever risk giving birth naturally again. It's been over 12 weeks and I'm still bleeding occasionally, and I still have pain in my womb... It was so horrible :(

How long after the 1st one did you have no. 2? I have heard that if you don't leave too long between each baby, it should be easier. However, I was thinking of leaving a bigger age gap.

I just had baby # 2 & my situation was similar. With my first I was able to get an epidural. This one happened too fast. And it was torture. I measured a month behind my whole pregnancy & my baby ended up being average size. The way he had to position himself severely hurt my tailbone on top of everything else. It was just a horrible experience that has me thinking I don't want anymore children either. I was really looking forward to child birth this time around too, hoping I could trying managing the pain better. The only thing better was I pushed faster!
