We feel like we're posting so many questions here, we really appreciate all your advice.

We're sort of embarrassed and mad at ourselves for putting our own sleep as important, as it seems very petty in the grand scheme of things. But it gets frustrating when going through daytime in a zombie daze and not being able to get daily things done and getting anxious as nighttime comes because we know all the nighttime awakenings are going to happen and the cycle continues.

We've been reading about baby sleep cycles and that newborns don't differentiate between day/night awake/sleeping without some help from the parents. They list several strategies such as light and noise during the day, quiet and dark at night, nightime routine, etc. we have two questions:

1. Some articles we've read says to keep baby awake during the day to encourage sleep at night. Our little guys sleeps ALL DAY and is awake much of the night. Past few nights he sleeps from 4am-9am or so without waking up (wish we could push the cycle back a few hours). He met birth weight at about 5 days out if the womb, so doc says don't wake for feedings anymore. We've tried to keep him up during the day, but NOTHING we do keeps him awake. Any ideas?

2. Do you have any real work strategies or tips to encourage the daytime awake and nighttime sleep routine?

Thank you in advance!

I wouldn't try keep him awake sleep breeds sleep and newborns need a lot of sleep
Keep things bright in the day don't make things quiet etc talk to him a lot during feeding
Night time keep things dark as can be limit eye contact and no talking to him
These are the things I've always done X

Yeah I agree. Definitely don't keep baby awake during the day at this age. I didn't try that with my other kids until much later and I found sometimes it didn't help anyway as they would be over tired and even harder to get to sleep at night. I agree with keeping it bright during the day and dark at night. Can also try night time routines but the baby might not catch on until later. As newborns baby really doss just need you. It isn't really advisable to train them or anything yet. They need lots of sleep and cuddles. It's hard but it does pass :) good luck!
