My LO is 71/2 weeks old. He has been problems with reflux (on zentac) and also lots and lots of gas that seems to cause him lot of discomfort as he will scream like in pain. He also is not able to poo on his own. I have to use q tip or glycerin suppository (per pediatrician) to help him go. He is not constipated because when his poo comes out it is soft. He strains and strains and cries until finally I have to help. His ped. said to try Nutramigen and I did it for a week and a half now but he absolutely hates the taste and is starting to refuse bottle. We have appointment tomorrow with Gastro doc. I was sitting here and goggling different types of formula so I just wanted to see if anyone else problems with lo taking nutramigen and what did you do about it?

My son is on the nutramigen and it has helped a lot. It may not be the formula he is refusing. It could be because of the reflux. My son refused when he was in a lot of pain. We ended up switching from zantac to prilosec and he is a different baby. It took a lot of crying, both his and mine, to get to this point. Lol

Thanks for replying. We have seen GI on Monday and when they have done test on his stool she said that he has irritated colon which usually happens due to allergies to protein in milk and soy. So he is not suppose to have any other formula but hypoallergenic. She also increased Zantac since he has gained weight. My LO is a little piggy, poor thing is in pain but he was taking his Newborn Enfamil like a clock work lol. Instead of Nutramigen we tried Alimentum and right now he is taking it well. Nutramigen is a good formula but it was not for him. My friends little girl is on it and it has worked wonders for her. I do not think it was the taste but texture. Nutramigen is just little thinner then other formulas. He seems to be doing much better however he now continues to not be able to have bm on his own. I have to help him use the bathroom either with q him or suppositories. GI said that was ok and we have follow up in two weeks so if he does not start doing it on his own then she will try something else but not sure what that is. I guess we had to start with fixing one thing at the time. I am glad your LO is doing better because I know how it feels when you see them cry in pain and you know something is wrong but there is nothing we can do but just sit and rock them. I am also glad that his pediatrician has believed me and send me to see specialist because I have read some posts where because babies are gaining weight they say it is just something they have to grow out of or call it colic :nope:.

I spoke too soon...It seems like Zantac worked for a week and today it seems it has stopped working...this happened when he was first put on it...
poor baby fussed through whole bottle...I hope they will switch him to something else....

How long before Prilosec started to work for your lo

My 9 week old sounds similar to your little one. She has reflux and is also on zantac and her ped just increased it, but it's still not doing anything that I can tell. Is it working for you? Mine is on 1 1/2 ml 2x a day. we just started alimentum yesterday and I'm hoping it helps. today hasn't been good tho...she is still fighting her way thru her feedings with the arching back, screams, legs kicking and she is not taking as much as she had been. About 3 days ago she stopped taking 5 oz and will now take only 3 and sometimes 2 b/4 she is absolutely done. I think it's from the pain. Wonder how long until we know if the alimentum is helping?

good luck to you and your lo. It's so heartbreaking to see them crying so much from being so uncomfortable. Oh, do you know if the alimentum causes more gas? After my lo's last feeding she screamed for at least 45 minutes b/4 I could get her comforted. She's always had lots of gas and I'm jsut wondering if the new formula would cause more.

I honestly do not think that zantac is doing much for lo...He is on the same dose as your daughter and it seemed to work for few days and then back to same..I also now think it is messing with his sleep..he woke up every hour last night pulling on his head and crying...he jerks a lot in his sleep and that is what wakes him up...I know babies do that but he seems to do it all the time...even when awake...he takes cat naps now as before he has slept and took good naps...due to not sleeping he is very cranky...someone said that zantac can cause headaches as well but I am not sure...we have his 2 month app tomorrow so I will ask the doctor..I figure if it is not doing anything then might as well take him off...about alumentum I am not sure about gas..my lo is very gassy as it is but it took about 3 days after starting for his pain to kind of settle and as GI explained it is because his colon is irritated and needed to get better...also it tastes and smells horrible but that is all he can have because he is allergic to protein in the milk...have you tried ready to feed alimetum...I used that for couple of days and then continued to use powder..but who knows...poor babies cannot tell us what is wrong

My 3 1/2 month old is on Nutramigen and has been for about 1 1/2 months. He is on zantac as well. When we 1st started the Nutramigen and the reflux meds it was a whole new baby for about a month. It has slowly changed....he was and still is spitting up lots on Nutramigen, and also seems hungry still even though he will only take any where from a 4-5oz bottle every 2-3 hrs. The crying almost all day as seemed to come back as well. naps do not last long at all and half the time he wakes up screaming. I have purchased a wedge for his crib to keep him elevated. I also keep him sitting up for 30 mins after a feeding. I have noticed lately he is taking forever to eat a bottle and he at times he will turn his head and or push it out, guessing either he doesnt like it or due to reflux it bothers him.
I have been doing some research and have found that some moms do half and half of 2 formulas...I have been seeing moms doing half Nutramigen and half AR or half Nutramigen and half prosobee and has seen huge changes in their babies.
As for his diapers OMG he will blow his diaper out on Nutramigen, and boy does it smell...sometimes have to open a window!
I am calling dr in the morning to try and get him in cause I really dont want to wait until middle of August for his 4 month check up. Last time we went when they changed him from Enfacare to Nutramigen they also upped his dosage of reflux meds due to his weight (he was early/preemie) so not sure if maybe they need to do that again, maybe they need to change his meds, and or formula, but I plan on bringing up mixing 2. His spit up even occurs 1-2 hrs after a feeding and being burped, and there is times its just a little which is normal but 75% of the time its lots and it can vary from very watery,to cottage cheese mucus looking, I change his clothes at least 4 times a day
My husband has reflux BAD...and had surgery at 4 months so his runs in the family.
My sons dr did say he had mild colic...MILD colic ...ummm didnt know there was mild colic, thought they was colic or wasnt colic, but anyways, once put on Nutramigen the colic seem to go away, but like I mentioned the crying has came back, and not just fussy...screaming. It gets to the point where I dont want to go any where cause I dont know how he will be/feel.
My son has started teething so that is just adding more to his plate of pain.
I will say Gripe water is my best friend!!!
I feel ur pain, there is days u dont know to pull ur hair out or cry with them.
