Hi Everyone.

I went to the hospital last Sunday as I had a slight bleed and some pain. Cut a long story short it turns out I have a polyp on my cervix which is nothing to worry about. They booked me in for a scan on Wednesday (just gone) to check the babies hb's. During the scan the sonographer said everything was fine apart from one baby has a "prominent bowel". When i went to speak to the Dr about it she said it looks as though the baby has "swollen kidneys" and I have been booked in for another scan this Wednesday coming to see if it is still the same. When I left the hospital I felt like we had loads of unanswered questions. I just got told it was quite common and not to worry.....easier said than done. I have since been on google and read posts that state its nothing to worry about and others that say it could related to Downs Syndrome?????

Does anyone have any experience of this they can share with me please? I am really fraked out about it!

Thanks xx

Did they say it was Renal Pelvic Dilation?
My baby has one kidney twice the size of the other because of excess fluid.. Have you got a consultant scan? It's really really unlikely to be DS, but at your next scan they will look for other markers. I'm going through the same thing but a few weeks ahead so if you want to know anything I'll do my best to help :)

Wow, just realised we're both in Liverpool. Are you under the Womens?

My baby had Renal Pelvis Dilation. It was found at my 20 week scan, and was still there at scans at 34 and 36 weeks, and 2 weeks after birth. We had to give a small dose of antibiotics every day since, as if she was to get an infection that may have caused a problem.

We had another scan last week and the kidneys are no longer dilated.

It is highly unlikely to be a problem, please try not to worry too much, I heard about the DS link when googling myself and wish I hadn't - it's widely discredited as a marker apparently.

If you want to know anything else I'll try and help.

Thanks girls. I appreciate your posts. It's just not knowing that is getting me worried!
The sonographer mentioned a prominent bowel but the notes say hypoechoic areas seen in abdomen - renal area. When I spoke to the Dr she said it was probably swollen kidneys. I asked what would happen and she told me not to worry as I was only 17 weeks they would get a better look when I am 18 weeks. because the Dr was so vague I left the hospital thinking my babies could die! It was only when I googled that I calmed down (until I saw the DS comments!)

Katie - yes I am under the Womens - we have an appt at the Fetal medicine Unit on Wednesday morning. Is that where you have been going? Did they check the baby over thoroughly or did they offer you tests aswell? I hope everything sorts itself out for your bubba xx

Claire - am glad that everything is now fine with Ruby's kidneys - it gives me hope xx

Yeah, I was seen at the FMU, the consultant (Mr Williams I think?) was lovely and really made me feel better. I was offered an amnio but declined. They scanned me for almost an hour- this was when I was 21+3 so be prepared for them possibly calling you back again when the baby is bigger!- and checked for DS markers and found none.
Did they tell you the measurement of the enlarged kidney? Mine was 10mm when it should have been 5mm at that stage, and she also had an enlarged ureter.
I've been booked in for another consultant scan at 30 weeks, and been told to expect to go back at 34, 36 and 38 weeks. They've also said that from the scan it appears to be a blockage of some kind, and she may need an operation- but only a tiny one.
Please try not to worry, I know how scary it is :hugs: xxx

Hiya Hun sorry for the late reply. No they didn't measure the kidneys. They said they wold need to wait until I was 18 weeks to get a better look. I've been ok the past few days but I am a nervous wreck tonight. Just been to the vet with the dog as he had a sore paw and when she checked him over he has an orregular heartbeat!! I feel so sorry for myself at the moment....I just hope and pray it's good news tomorrow. Hope you're ok xxx

Thanks hun - not good news I'm afraid. One of the babies has a kidney that is full of cysts and not working and they couldn't find the other one on the scan. We have to go back in 3 weeks. If they still can't find a healthy kidney, the baby won't make it. The other baby is fine but we are absolutely devastated. Just hoping that in three weeks time, by some kind of miracle they find a healthy kidney. xxx

:hugs: :hugs: I've got everything Xd for you that the baby's just too small for them to get a good enough look. Let me know how you get on at your next scan xxx

We went back for our scan today. Twin 1 has no functioning kidneys, no bladder and no amniotic fluid and the abdomen is full of cysts. The Dr confirmed that baby won't survive after birth. They are not going to do anything until 32 weeks though as Twin 2 will be at risk before then. We are devastated but we will cope xxxx
