Today I am 8 days PP.

I went to go pee and noticed an enormous clot on my pad. Perhaps the size of my palm? Consistency was that of canned cranberry sauce (LOL). Scared me to death!

I am still having red blood lochia. It resembles my menses so I don't think much of it.

Is any of this normal?! I called the on call OB and he said the clot was fine as long as it didn't have heavy bleeding with it or if I wasn't continually heavy bleeding.

How long should be lochia be red?!

I had exactly the same and it really scared me. Luckily my sister is a midwife so she popped over and checked there was no placenta in it. I was told as long as there is no gushing afterwards it was fine.
Sorry I can't remember how long it was red for but pretty sure it was longer than 8 days

With DS my Lochia lasted about 10 days. With my DD it lasted for 5 weeks. Red blood both times.

Bleeding times vary a lot from woman to woman I wouldn't worry as long as you don't get really heavy bleeding. I had stopped bleeding by 2 weeks but I lost a clot about the size of a ping pong ball 7 days after the birth. I wouldn't worry f your ob is not worried.

Jut to add, with my first I had retained placenta, it was passed off as clotting until I started to get an infection and took a "clot" to the doctor. If you're worried I'd get checked out- it is most probably normal, but better safe than sorry :)

I agree, if there is any chance it is placenta get it checked out. I gave my blood clot a good poke, gross I know, but I was quite sure that it was only a blood clot.

I had this with DD, it terrified me haha.
The MW said it's completely normal, especially if it's just after you've been lying/sitting down for a while.

I know this might be quite a bit TMI but I'm a postpartum nurse and I usually tell ladies if they're not too squeamish to check any large clots themselves, you just rub them out between two pads, if it disintegrates to all red blood and small stringy bits (which will rub out too if you keep at it) its all good, any tissue you definitely want to get checked out.

For us rule of thumb is to call the doc about any clots that are bigger than a loonie or toonie (large Canadian coins) or if you're soaking 1-2 pads in 1-2 hrs...

Gross tidbit of the day! Lol

I bled for about 5 weeks with DD. In the first week, I passed some scary clots. My placenta was delivered in tact, so they told me it was just part of the PP bleeding, the biggest one I had was about golf ball sized, I had hopped up and could feel it coming through, bit uncomfy with all those stitches!

I had tons of clots!! Normal! Some were about the sz of lemons

We also get told anything bigger than a 50 pence piece to call the mw x

Oh god, I know what you mean!
After I had my daughter, I thought I was dying from blood loss (literally)..
I had massive clots, and didn't think it was normal.. But visited the doctor and told me all was fine.
And I know what you mean about cranberry sauce LOL.. looks exactly like it.
Won't be eating cranberry sauce with thanksgiving anymore!

As PPs have said, unless there is tissue included it probably is not a problem right now. An absolute red flag/warning/get to the ER sign is if you have stopped bleeding pretty much entirely, and then suddenly pass a clot and start bleeding again or if any part of the clot looks like it could be placenta.

But really, when in doubt feel comfortable calling in or getting checked out :) Better safe than sorry, especially if it helps relieve some stress!
