i am 23 weeks pregnant with our 3rd child, and i know its a ways off, but i am very concerned about the epidural i will be getting when it comes time..i had our little girl almost 11 months ago and it was at a different hospital than when i had our son nearly five years ago, because of insurance issues i will be having this little girl at the same hospital as last time, which really makes me nervous because i had the worst anaestesiologist (spelling?) of all time..he actually was insulting me the entire time he performed the procedure, i thought my husband was gonna put him through the wall and he would have, if the guy hadnt been the only anaestesiologist in the whole hospital, this so called doctor even blamed me for the tube falling out of my back when he was "all finished" and already halfway out the door, i was still leaned over in the hunched position, he didnt want to even tape me up..but what was the most frustrating issue with the whole ordeal was the medication he put into me was only numbing medicine..and it wasnt working well at all...when i had our son my then doc made sure to put painkillers in the epidural as well, not just lidocaine, which i thought was typical..but with the second labour and different hospital and new "doc" all i got was numbing meds..after 2 hours of crying and moaning my nurse (who was apologizing for this doctor the entire time i was there, and she wasnt the only one) finally convinced him to put some fentanyl in it as well..it worked, lasted for a few hours and my OB, who we love, had shown up by then, made him give me one more about an hour before i gave birth, i even thanked him for it and he wouldnt even speak to me, literally did not say a word and just left the room as soon as the syringe was empty..this experience is one of the worst i have ever had, and now i am TERRIFIED that it will happen again with this delivery..my ob told me its not likely i would have that same doctor to perform the epidural procedure, he didnt even know him, never heard of him, and hasnt since..but im wanting to know if when it does come time to get this done can i ask whichever doctor performs it to please make sure they put painkillers in along with the numbing meds..but im afraid if i do that then i will be coming off as some junkie or drug seeker, when all i really want is to be as comfortable as i can to make sure i have enough energy to push..i was in labour for almost 3 days with our last baby, if it wasnt for those 2 shots of fentanyl in that iv i highly doubt i would have been able to get her out in under 10 minutes..yeah she came that quick..i know i have tons of time before this moment comes but its a huge weight on my mind and i didnt want to ask my ob this just yet, im afraid it will seem really unusual and cause for a red flag to come up or something..but id really like to get rid of this concern, so any help would be appreciated..thanks..

You should be able to ask your OB this question. Explain the experience to him if you need to but from a medical professional's perspective (I'm an RN), an expectant mother who has concerns about effective pain management during her delivery after a bad experience will NOT be looked down on as "some junkie." If you are, you need a new OB. Good luck!!
