Estradiol Levels and Follicles - help!

Hi all
I had my first monitoring scan yesterday (day 6/7 of stims on the short protocol) and had about 35 or so follicles (yikes) and an estradiol level of 4500 (I'm in the UK). I have another scan tomorrow and am hoping for EC on Friday but am worried in case this gets cancelled or I end up with severe OHSS, as the level looks pretty high based on what little I have read. I am thinking the Estradiol will probably be about 9000 tomorrow as I heard it doubles every 48 hours.
Is it normal for it to be so high with that number of follicles?
Does anyone have any thoughts/experiences they can share?

Hi Polly,

When is your next scan? I had my scans & bloods done and only ended up stimming for 10 days. My bloods went from 7000 to 12000 on day day 11 (10 Stims in) and after no more gonal f I went to 15000. They didn't cancel my EC but I did coast for 2 days & after EC now have mild OHSS. I only had 16 follies though?

Every case is different so I'd be led my your FS, I'm sure they are monitoring you well and may lower your dosage depending on the size of follies. How big are they?

Hope you are ok, try not to worry although I know that's easier said than done

Thanks for that - got next scan tomorrow so we will see what they say. On Monday they were thinking EC for Friday so we will see if that is still on (fingers crossed). I feel like I have OHSS already as been so bloated and uncomfortable since about the 2nd or 3rd day of stims but not sure if that's possible.

Follies were all different sizes, a couple around 15mm and a bunch of small ones, and a number were around the 10,11, or 12 mark. Its just freaking me out knowing that there are so many in there, feel like my ovaries are going to burst!

God you poor thing! Will keep my fingers & toes crossed! You must feel like a battery hen at the moment!

I had 16 between 12 and 20 and despite no drugs for 2 days they were plenty big enough at EC. they were worried about OHSS after I triggered and I have a mild case now.,. I look 6 months pregnant!! So long as it doesn't get worse they'll continue with my transfer x

Good luck hun I had levels of around 6,000 on day 7 of stimming I had loads of follicles growing over 40+ (POCS for you) most at decent sizes around 20+ were good sizes rest were small i had EC a few days later. My hospital adivsed a lower dose of the trigger shot i took 5,000 instead of the 10,000 wot is normally given.

I think i only stimmed for around 9 days, but i also felt my ovaries were raving..

All my follices measured on my last scan around day 9 around 13mm to around 17mm and i was worried if they would catch up by EC day but they did as i got a lovley 17 eggies and all were mature.. I had bloating also, but all i can advise is to ensure you drink lots and lots of water to help with any OHSS symptons..I had a mild case and i believe that the water i was drinking really helped get rid of any side effects..

Going through all treatment i drank 2 litres a day but once i got told i had mild case of OHSS they advised upping it to around 3 litres.. So i ensured through 7am when i woke up too 10pm at night i drank 3 litres if not more!!

Water is the key here, you need lots! This will help with any side effects of mild OHSS.. I had it mild but within a few days after EC my bloat went down and i was passing lots of urine and drinking lots that is one important sign making sure your passing good measurment of urine..

So what i advise now is to drink WATER WATER WATER WATER this is very important

Theyre still not sure whether I've got mild ohss but my e2 was 31000 and I only had about 10 follicles, my consultant said usually each follicle releases about 500 iu of oestrogen, I too had a lower dose of pregnyl for me trigger, I also had a drip post egg collection, and now am on tinzaparin for 17 days, oh and also another drug but not sure what it's for, it was just recommended.

I'm sure you'll be ok, they've seen ohss lots of times before so they'll look after u if that's what it is

Thanks for your responses guys, am feeling a bit more reassured now. Congratulations on your pregnancy, beauty! Hopefully Mrs Sunshine will be joining you over in the pregnancy forum soon!

So I had another scan today, still loads and loads of follicles but only 9 at 15mm or above. I have just done my trigger shot and am having EC on Friday so hopefully at least a number of those can be collected (I don't think the other smaller ones will catch up before Friday). My estradiol level was 8000 today -it still seems really high but the clinic don't seem too concerned so I just hope they are right! I was told to take the whole dose of HCG so hopefully that won't send me over the edge!

Thanks for the advice on the water, will start upping my intake now.

I was given some tablets too from clinic which i took for 3 days i think after ec to help with ohss..
