Hi ladies..

I had my baby boy on Saturday, I was induced due to pre eclampsia, and then had to be on medication to prevent seizures, and so was told I couldn't BF because of this for at least 48 hours.

I thought id missed my window of opportunity but have had a really helpful midwife who suggested I try him to the breast anyway and surprisingly we seem to be getting the hang of it although im combination feeding while i try to build up a supply.becuase i also have a 15 month old at home, i have more opportunities in the evening and overnight to tryhim on the breast, and relying on the formula a bit more in the day.

i know this isnt ideal but this is what the circumstances are. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced similar, or has any good hints and tips to give me. And do you think its possible to BF mainly on an evening?

I found that Lani had only a very small amount of breastmilk in the first 48 hours to be honest (my milk didnt come in until day four and until than she didnt seem to need it!) I also found that in the very early weeks she fed much, much more in the evenings and overnight than she did in the day... in fact I was told that night feeding at this stage was more important as its when baby stimulates your milk supply! Personally I think it is more than possible for you to go from where you are to exclusive breast feeding, although if you prefer to combination feed, then evening and overnight feeding wil give your baby a very positive start x

I fed both formula and breast for about the first month of my middle son's life (Formula fed DS#1). I really struggled to get the hang of it and was constantly plagued by visitors.

He was born end of November, I managed to have a full day xmas day that year to just constantly feed on demand and never looked back. Is it possible for someone to have your 15 month old for the day? If it is go to bed with either good book or TV and your LO and just feed all day on demand, you should produce lots of milk next day and then it should become easier. Also if you have a breast pump, try and express for just a few mins every hour and that should also increase supply and make feeding easier.

Alternatively if you want to carry on the way you are do that. Just remember with BF its supply and demand the more you manage to feed the more milk you'll produce.

Hope that helps xxxxx

I couldn't BF my baby until she was 4 days old....and I am exclusively BF'ing her along with pumping for hubby to give the odd bottle.

No formula.
