Extended Rear Facing Carseat

My daughter is 3 yrs + 1 month and still rear-facing in the Maxi Cosi Mobi, her feet are against the back seat, but she has known no different as she has always been rear-facing so is happy! The max seat weight is 25kg, which is 55lbs (it states around age 5), at the rate she is growing it will do her til she is nearer 7! She will be in it til she reaches the weight limit.

My son is 15 months and rear-facing still in the graco infant carrier which will do him a couple more months (its up to 13kg) I am currently looking at getting another erf seat for him:flower:

Are you sure it's 25kg hun? I looked at the Mobi when I was choosing our RF seat and am pretty sure it only went to 18kg

ETA: I only mention this for safety reasons, in case you keep her in there past the weight limit by mistake :) xx

Sorry - ignore me, it was just one random website I'd looked at and now I've checked the Maxi Cosi website does say it's 25kg :dohh:

Were hoping to stay ERF as long as possible. Our little guy is pretty chunky but I think hes going to be quite short also so Im hoping we get another couple of years yet. We have the BeSafe iZi combi X3 isofix seat, so have the option to change to forward facing if we need to, but hes no where near the back of the seat yet so hoping to stay rear as long as possible.

More important than the weight limit is actually the height limit. The distance between the top of a child's head and the top of the seat should have absolutely no less than one inch room. Even if they exceed the weight limit, which hardly ever happens, it's the height limit that is most important.

We are still rear facing here too :) LOs feet are just touching the seat but we can alter the seat to see a bit further back to give him a bit longer without bending his legs.

:)

Just make sure that altering the seat to go further back is safe. Take the car and seat to someone who is qualified to check it, here in the US there are some fire stations that are certified to check car seat safety, but certainly not all. I have a friend who is a fire fighter who said that becoming certified to check car seat safety is a very lengthy process for them and not all fire stations are equipped to do it. For me it's a big deal and so I took it to someone certified to check the safety. Altering the seat may be indicated as "safe" in the pamphlet but may jeopordize the safety.

Bent legs is not uncomfortable and should not be avoided, that's what we were told by the expert we visited. The purpose of the car seat is to minimize injuries to the head, neck and spine of the child, all other body parts should not be accommodated first.

Children in rear facing car seats can be in them until the top of their ears are level with the top of the seat :) thats what i was told by a ERF specialist anyways

edit: my son head is no where near the top of the seat yet this is just the advise i were given

Ah ok, that's extremely different than what we were told. It's kind of scary but it does seem safer that their whole head be protected by the top of the seat, especially by flying debris so I think I prefer to follow the directions we were given. Are you in the US or UK? Here is some of the info we read on the car seat lady's page, she is the doctor we visited. https://www.thecarseatlady.com/car_seats/rear-facing_seats.html

Jaxon was ERF until about 18 mths, we moved him around after we had a major car seat malfunction...the buckle broke, it wouldnt release the belt, and my son was litterally trapped in his carseat....

The reason we moved him to FF after that was bc my OH refused to install it RF.

our next baby, whenever that is will be ERF until 2, as that is what is currently recommended by pediatricians and emergancy personel.

Extended rear-facing seats are available throughout the UK.

I am in Scotland and had several to choose from when we purchased my daughters, but that was only 2 years ago, maybe before then there may not have been much around.

Thanks everyone for all the info. I just got see this as I've been super busy the last week.

So over the weekend we were at a little get together at OH's parent's house. Everyone had a few drinks (except me) and MIL totally attacked me (in front of their visiting family) about my son's car seat. Told me it was ridiculous that he was rear facing, he doesn't like it, he's uncomfortable, if our country says it's safe to FF than it is and that IT'S NOT ANY SAFER THAN FF ?!?! She was actually quite rude. I kept my cool and said "do the research, it's significantly safer, just because our country doesn't require it doesn't mean anything. I will not change my mind about this. I'm more concerned with him being alive god forbid we get in a accident than his legs being straight, which really isn't even an issue because he's not uncomfortable anyways!"

Worst part was OH totally agreed with her. They like to paint me as neurotic and over protective. So frustrating!

:( How annoying. Just be safe in the knowledge that you're making the right choice for you and LO, and ignore them, hard as it is.

OP, I hate when MIL and OH gang up on you. Gahk! You are right, they are wrong, there!

I hope it's ok if I ask a question that's been bugging me. We got a Britax Marathon 70-G3 and we have a Honda Civic 08. Not sure if any of that matters, but the seat is supposed to be ok rear facing up to 40 pounds and 49", which we are well under still and I was hoping it would last for years but the leg room is incredibly small! I think if she had no shoes and maybe leggings (no pants) she could bend them comfortably, but right now it's winter and even though I take her shoes off when we are in the car, she sits with her legs like up at a 45 degree angle! I sort of worry about the blood draining out of them or something. We don't drive very far, but if we had to go further than 15 min in the car, I think ti would be real unpleasant. Is this normal??? The way I see it, we have this winter, summer, maybe part of next fall but I can't imagine she can do winter again next year. I'll try and post a picture but I was wondering if anyone had similar trouble.

we purchased ours 2 years ago and no where around us had even heard of them  i noticed this independant baby shop is selling the Besafe erf seat the other day, she said it was very new to them :/

i remember coming on here when we were looking at them and lots of people on here were recommending the website we used to get ours.

Hiya. We have the besafe erf.
Everyone thinks i'm crazy, but i love my baby. You stick to your guns.

Anyone's OH disagree with them about ERF? I convinced my OH to keep our 1 year old RF but it took some work and he doesn't want him that way for long. I'd like to keep him that way for as long as possible.

Doesn't the US recommend RF until 2yrs? If they do, as I'm pretty sure they do, then 'her country' as she put it, does NOT say it's safe to FF at your sons age

I'm facing this with my own mother at the moment too so I feel your pain. I've shown her untold videos, given all the statistics and % but she still rolls her eyes and brings it up every time my OH drops our LO off at hers. I just don't understand why they can't trust our judgement? I'm sure they would have faced the same issue but with using a carseat at ALL when we were babies so why don't they understand?? Surely they should put the safety of their grandchildren above any personal opinions? :growlmad:

To start with my OH didn't understand and just saw the £££ of the new seat, but I showed him some statistics and now he gets it. He still doesn't have the same passion about ERF that I do but he supports my decision and can explain our/my reasons well when questioned :winkwink:

all it took was showing my OH "joels story" on youtube-- he agreed to erf.

qpaulina42 can you post a pic? im sure your lo is fine but a pic would be good x
