Extreamly low cervix/ cervical cerclage

I am 21 weeks along, 5th pregnancy, second baby.

I started loosing my mucus plug about an hour ago, and my cervix is less than an inch from being outside of my body. I'm terrified of loosing my baby. I called the dr and he seemed concerned and is having me come in tomorrow morning to be checked. I'm also having mild cramps and a low backache. My daughter was born at 33 weeks... We're supposed to find out this baby's sex tomorrow.... All of a sudden my world is coming crashing down... This did NOT happen with my first. I have no idea if my baby will be okay. This early in a pregnancy how is it possible for my uterus to be so heavy that my cervix is THAT low?!

Has this happened to any of you? What was the outcome? Also, have any of you dilated with a cerclage in place? What does it feel like?

Hi. I don't have experience of this, but just wanted to wish you well. Really try very hard to stay off your feet and keep your feet elevated if possible, at least until you get to the drs. Sounds like he should have let you come in today already. Thinking of you and let us know how it all went. Hold on baby!!!

Well we went in and I did put myself on bedrest yesterday. Turns out baby is traverse and flipping over slowly and that was causing contractions and the back pain. Also, the cervix being low is due to the weight of the baby- some women end up with their cervix outside of their bodies till they get to full term! Dr said if that happens to me he'll fix it afters delivery. As long a the cervix stays sewn shut- there's no cause for concern. Also, IT'S A BOY!

Oh, what a relief! Congrats on the boy. I'm also expecting a boy, and am only a week or so behind you, so I really felt for you. To early still for viability, but so much THERE already, and a little person, that the loss would hurt incredibly much. Have you decided on a name yet?
Good luck with your low cervix, I am sure it does have some implications of resting, not lifting, straining, no sex etc? So I am thinking of you. But still it is such a better result than what could otherwise have happened.
Yay for closed cervixes. May ours stay so until at least 38 weeks!!!

Thanks so much for the kind thoughts! Our sons name is James Anthony i'm so excited! AHH! Yes, with the complications come the added "pleasures" of pelvic rest, and no lifting or working out... all that. Even though we're moving from Illinois to Virginia at the end of the month! I get to pack boxes, and leave them wherever i packed them for DH to move! lol

Hi hun. Was going to say that a low cervix is a very different thing to an open one - then you updated to say the same thing, and that you had been reassured!

I had cervical stitches in pregnancy, the most recent one for twins, and I got to 38wks with 7 and 9Ib boys on board - the stitches work brilliantly. As for your low cervis, it is obviously prolapsed, but this isn't usually an issue. Many women on subsequent pregnancies have low cervixes/uteruses. Me being one of them. thank you so much! It's nice to know that i'm not the only one this has happened to! LO keeps kicking my cervix repeatedly and it hurts SO BAD i cry! I was worried he'd break the stitches by kicking so hard but the doctor assured me that isn't possible. Things are so much different with high risk pregnancies compared to normal! Like when people ask- What's your due date? I always have to decide if i tell them the "due date" that i know I'll never make it to, or tell them around when the baby would come. I just started saying "sometime around the end of the year" lol!
