Feel really sad. My 10 day old baby has just failed newborn hearing screening and has been referred to audiologist.

It could be congestion, it could be background noise or her snuffly breathing affecting the result, or she could have hearing problem.

I ve got to wait for a whole week until follow up appt to investigate further.

Anyone else had similar experience ?

Both my dd2 and dd3 failed theirs at the hospital (both in one ear.)
At their follow up test, both passed it instantly, literally within 5 seconds of the test starting.

Try not to worry, it is VERY common :flower:

Please try not to worry. My LO passed but before they did the test they warned me it's very common to fail the first test and not to be alarmed by a fail.

My friend's little boy failed the test at the hospital and the one a week later but passed the third one. There is absolutely nothing wrong with his hearing except he's 2 now and as most toddlers he has selective hearing :haha:

They should have put your mind at rest.

My daughter cannot hear out of her right ear right now (although it's correctable, thankfully!). She went to an audiologist at 3 1/2 months for the full test, and it was simple. We sat in a dark room and they let her fall asleep in my arms, hooked her up to the machine with some cords placed around her ears and I think other parts of her head, and did some tests. I think altogether it took around 30-45 minutes. They told me the results right after the test so I didn't have to wait a week or two at least.

Having hearing difficulties doesn't always mean there is going to be trouble with development (which was my major worry). DD can walk, talk, and get into trouble just as well as any other child and is not behind in any area. Unless you know her you can't tell she cannot hear out of her right ear right now. We've also met with an ENT and reconstruction surgeon, and they told us that it's easier for people who were born with the impairment to adjust since they have not known anything else (if that makes sense). Technology has come along way now as well, and if your baby does have a hearing issue you can look into options to help with hearing (I've been seeing a lot of those "baby hears parents for the first time!" videos on my Facebook feed lately).

I know my situation might be different since it's only one ear affected (not sure if your baby failed one side or both), but I just wanted to give you some hope. It's scary and so worrisome in the beginning when you first find out there is an issue, but do some research, talk to the professionals, and for now just enjoy your little one. :hugs:

My little girl failed the test 3 times in 1 ear, they kept retesting as I stayed in hospital, they said it was common x

Thanks for the responses . She failed both sides, the tech kept saying that she was a fidget, and it could be background noise and that she was breathing quite heavily. It just took us off guard and this week is going to be a long one

My son failed all the screenings they did. They did it twice at the hospital after he was born and once at another doctor, who referred me to an audiologist. Then at that office they did the screening AGAIN before doing the same test Kitteh_Kat mentioned. Then with that test the results were all normal. They couldn't really ever tell me why he failed all the screenings when everything was fine..

My nephew failed his first test too but passed his follow up. Try not to stress

My LO failed his hearing test in one ear and then passed straight away a week later when we went back in. The doctor said it was very common and was most likely just mucus in his ear :)

DD failed the first test at the hospital and then when they tried to do the second, she was really fidgety so they couldn't get an accurate result. We went for another screening when she was a few weeks old and she passed instantly. They do normally reassure you that it is really common to fail the first test due to mucus etc so try not to worry too much.

X

DD failed in one ear at the hospital and then passed a day later at the maternity unit. It's SO common. I know it's hard but try not to worry at this point. They tell you it's common to fail the first one because it really is.

Another first time fail here, passed with flying colours a week later. It is very very common, but it did take me by surprise and worry me to start with, as my little boy passed his first time. I wasn't expecting my daughter not to. Fingers crossed for you that it was just mucus or background noise.

My little man failed his first test and I was devastated but he ended up passing the 2nd one...keep your chin up momma.

Mine failed the newborn ones in hospital on two different days but passed at three weeks old. Try not to worry yet. Big hugs x

My lo failed the first time too. They didn't explain it to me properly, that its very common to fail at first, just brought him back and said he failed. I was so hormonal and overwrought, that I was convinced he was deaf. Until they did it again, and he was fine! Lol I hope your lo passes the next time, I'm sure he will though!

Both mine failed the first test but were fine when retested. Try not to worry at this stage (easier said than done!)

So we had the second screening today. Not a fun experience. She was really unsettled and did not settle and after 3 hours of trying we had to abandon. We did get more information though we need a retest nèxt week. She has a hearing loss in right ear but can hear some sounds. As I write this she is still screaming x

My DD failed her hearing test in the hospital, then twice when the HV came out to do it. She got referred and had an audiologist do a test at home which showed function in one ear but no response in the other. They came back again about a week later and she finally passed! It was a worrying time, especially as she failed so many times.

My adoptive nephew failed. They waited two weeks and passed then.

I don't have much hope that she will pass. She failed the basic one where they use probe to send echo to ear and the ear sends one back. She failed thîs on both sides. They managed to half complete the more detailed one using electrodes on her right. They manage to ascertain that she has a hearing loss but she responded to moderate sounds.
