..PLEASE ONLY READ AND REPLY IF YOU USE THIS METHOD..

I've seen the heated debates than can start about different methods of making up bottles and really haven't got the energy for another!

So for those who make bottles up in advance using freshly boiled water, then cool them quickly and put them in the fridge...

...how do you cool them quickly?

At the moment I am running the bottles under very cold water for a while, but I feel I am wasting water quite badly!

Is there another, more environmently friendly way to do it?! Can I put it in the freezer for a little while then transfer to fridge?

What do you do?

Thanks ladies... x

i fill up a basin with cold water, i pour some out then top up....it is a waste of water but cant think of other way, i know i read somewhere on another post about using ice packs in the water too which i thought was a good idea x

i keep a bowl of water in the fridge all the time, so i just put the bottles in the bowl til they are cool then put them on the top shelf..

I fill up the basin with cold water and let the bottles sit in it for a while

I put them in a jug & run them under a tap if she's crying, if she's just grizzley, i just leave the bottle to stand in the jug, usually is cool within 5 mins or so. I'm also using loads of water doing it this way though so i'd be interested in other methods :)

I put the bottles in jugs of cold water, and change it every couple of minutes until they are about room temp, then remove and put in fridge. It usually only takes 2-3 jugs of water per bottle, and no more than 10 mins total.

Ditto. I make all mine in an evening before his Dreamfeed. They go into the sink for 10-15 minutes in cold water then into the fridge.

If I quick cool mine I just fill the washing up bowl with cold water and put them in there x

i fill the basin up really full (as long as the bottles stay up right) with cold water, they cool really quick

In a bowl of cold water until room temp, then into the fridge xx

Heya! I am new to formula feeding and currently using ready made milk for bubs (as I am combination feeding atm). I will be switching to 100% formula soon and using powder. May I ask why the bottles need to be quick cooled before placing in fridge? Is it ok to keep them on the counter until you want to use them or just place them in the fridge still warm (if you are not adding the powder until you are ready to feed)?

Thanks! I have been giving thought lately as to how is best for me to make the bottles in advance :)

The method referred to in this thread is to make up the bottles hot, WITH the powder, then store the made up formula in the fridge until needed, up to a maximum of 24 hours. When using this method you need to get the bottle cold and in the fridge ASAP.

The other method that you mentioned (adding powder to cool boiled water when needed) is another popular one - and each has their own merits. You'll find loads of threads about it on here!

Hi, I didn't really want to get into the discussion on how to make up bottles because it seems to cause arguments! But I will just answer your question as I understand it...

If you are making up bottles (water and powder) in advance then you need to make them with freshly boiled water (over 70deg) - this kills any bacteria in the powder. Then you need to fast cool them, then put them in the fridge - this minimises the chance of any bacteria growing again (too cold). Then you can heat up when needed.

If you are just putting the water in the bottles in advance this (I believe) doesn't need to be cooled as there is nothing to grow! Then just add powder when needed.

Please do your own research and make up your OWN mind on what you want to do as many people do it in different ways..

Hope that helps... Good luck! :flower:

Thanks Blah & Loopy!! Makes more sense now (I didn't realise you were adding the powder). Thanks for explaining :)

I fill the washing up bowl with cold water - now its winter our water is very cold but when it was warmer, I added 1 or 2 ice packs from the freezer too, so it cooler even quicker x

If I need to make up a bottle quickly for LO I put it in the freezer for about 5-10 mins then run it under a cold tap if it needs a bit more.
As long as its been made with fresh boiled water I dont see any harm in cooling quickly in the freezer, just dont do what I did and forget to take it back out babys arnt too keen on milk ice lollys yet :)
