Fertility clinic appointment - what a waste of time

Hi all,

Bit of background before I start my rant: I got referred to the infertility clinic by a private consultant, who I had been seeing regarding irregular cycles and who diagnosed PCOS. When it became a fertility problem (TTC for over a year), she referred me to the hospital. While waiting to see them, I got pregnant (helped out by my CBFM). When I miscarried, my consultant told me to ring up and rebook my appointment, which I did.

Well, what I thought was going to happen did happen. The dr's opinion was 'well, you've got pregnant once, so we're not going to do anything'.

He hadn't read any of my referral notes. He said 'So you've been referred because you've had a miscarriage' to which I replied 'No - I've been referred because before I fell pregnant, we had been TTC for over a year, and I have PCOS and only ovulated 3 times in 14 months. And after I miscarried, my consultant told me to rebook my appointment so that my PCOS could be treated'. :dohh:

That's when he said 'But you've got pregnant, so you will get pregnant again'. a) I might not get pregnant again and b) if I do, I don't want to wait another 14 months for it to happen.

He didn't know about my symptoms, or my ultrasound or laparoscopy confirming PCOS, or the results of any other tests that my consultant has done. All of which were in my notes. :growlmad:

He is sending me for day 2 and day 21 blood tests (which have already been done numerous times by my dr and my consultant, and which have shown no ovulation). That's it.

I am really angry, but at the same time it just confirmed what I thought anyway - that now I've been pregnant, the fact that I had 14 months worth of (proven) problems and then lost the baby doesn't matter.

I asked whether PCOS could have been a factor in the miscarriage, and he said 'Oh well when you get pregnant again, we'll monitor you'. Well, that's not really answering my question is it...

He mentioned follicle tracking, but I just think that's pointless if it's another 3 month cycle, and I'm going for scan after scan and seeing no mature follicles, and then when an egg does appear after 3 months it could be poor quality so I could miscarry again.

It's all so frustrating! Why do drs treat people who want a baby as if they're hypochondriacs?! I know I'm not - my wildly irregular cycles and lack of ovulation prove that!

Rant over - I need a cup of tea :coffee:

What a dick bag! I'd demand to be treated, and I would have probably been screaming at him by the end of this visit! The nerve of these doctors---thinking they are better than us because we cant get pregnant and they think they're god. PSSSHH!!

What a rubbish doctor! So this is what kind of NHS treatment we pay extortionate taxes for then...

Just keep going back & pestering them; my friend has pcos & she had probs getting her doc to do anything too; she said she just kept making appointments & eventually they listened. She now has a beautiful baby girl.

Good luck!!!

go back to your GP and ask to be referred to someone else immediately - that is absolute bollocks! I have a child despite pcos and have knackered cycles and nobody once said to me you've done it once you'll do it again - theres no guarantee of that with pcos! So angry for you hun. Best of luck xx

You poor thing! I totally agree, get down to your GP and start yelling - and don't stop until he gives you a new referral.

It sucks, but I think that unfortunately you have to be willing to be a complete bitch if you want to get the right outcome with doctors sometimes.

What a jerk....

Good luck honey.:hugs:

first off i'm sorry you lost your pregnancy honey :hugs: same happened to me at the beginning of the year after 2 yrs ttc so i know how hard that is but secondly oh my bloody god! go to your GP and tell them you want to be referred to another FS because that is ridiculous. your entire history should be taken into account, he cant just fobb you off like that its not fair, this if your life not some neurosis :dohh: it pisses me off when they do this to people.

dont be down hearted, stand up for yourself and hopefully you'll be sitting opposite a better and more understanding FS soon  good luck!

I can see doing the monitoring after, the monitoring so they have a record at their office. Unfortunately there isn't a centralized system. So even though you may have had the tests before the Dr has no way of accessing the scans for them self. Frustrating I know. Be patient. They are likely going to start you on a drug plan of some sort once they have a base of where to start. I was followed for my CYs the first time and although you may not be Oing on a regular CY you are Oing which is more than promising. The waiting game really sucks. If you are being followed though for follicle growth then on those long CY you will be called by the FS's nurse with results and if they see a peek they will tell you to BD. I am not sure how often you are BDing, but did they also ask you to BD every other day after AF is gone? Might want to try that just in case you do O. I don't want to come across wrong. I just think there is hope. I don't O at all with out drugs, I also don't get AF at all with out drugs. So although the Dr may not have explained it all that well, even with PCOS you are Oing as you did get PG. The Dr can't answer if your PCOS had anything to do with your miscarriage as he wasn't the Dr involved with you at the time. Often they can check to see (if you were far enough along and can obtain enough tissue) if it was a chromosomal abnormality and with out having blood work to monitor there is no way at knowing what caused your MC. The FS is right in that if you were able to get PG then you are able to get PG. I really hope your journey isn't a long one this time around. I waited 2 years and 8 months to get my BFP the first time. I understand the frustration. However I had a FS that was fantastic and explained everything to me and really worked with my GP (who I loved) to really watch every cycle to see if I was Oing, what dose of what drug was going to work for me. I was on drugs of different doses and combination's for 10 months before I Oed. The Dr's don't have all the answers either. A lot of their job is trial and error and going from previous cases and experience. Chin up! Remember if it happened once it can happen again. It might not take 14 months to get your BFP this time. Read more about PCOS there are tons of great sites and you can try some things while you wait to get answers.
