So Finlay / Finley is one of our favourite choices but we don't know what to do about the spelling!

We would pronounce it fin-lee so people say we should go for Finley, but I prefer Finlay to look at but don't want to call my child Fin-lay!

I have a weird spelling name and it caused me so many problems growing up and now!!

If you saw Finlay written down would you instantly go 'hello fin-lay' or would you go 'hello fin-ley'

Ugh!!!

I would spell it Finley as I would guess thats how most people would think it was spelt so his birthday cards etc will be spelt correctly IMO :)

My lb is Finley and we went with that spelling as I thought Finlay was said Fin-lay. Since having my lo I now think they are both said Fin-lee (I might be wrong, that's just after hearing one lady saying it) Not sure if whether I knew that before I would've gone with Finlay instead or stuck to Finley x

In birthday cards he gets called Finlay alot, but that's from people that we aren't very close to x

You see I've always thought it was Finlay no matter what and I personally prefer that spelling.

But I don't want people getting it wrong in cards etc as I've grown up with this and it sucks! Lol

One of my best friends is called Finlay, and everyone always calls him 'fin-lee'. I prefer it spelt with an 'a' than an 'e' - not sure why though!

Finlay.

Depends where you're from/ you're accent because I pronounce it fin-lay
X

I guess it depends on where you are from and your accent, because I see Finley as Fin-lee and Finlay as Fin-lay. I'm in the US though, it's not a common name where I am from I don't think I've ever heard it, let alone seen it spelled both ways.

I prefer Finlay or Findlay as these are the traditional spellings. DH is Finlay, pronounced Fin-lee.

If it was me it would be Findley, because it's my mom's maiden name. =) Otherwise Finley.

I love this name! I asked DH, and now we're on the bandwagon of this name. Great choice.

I love Finley... I find it rolls off the tongue better.

My DH arguing Fenley :haha:

My brother is called Finlay and everyone pronounces it Fin-lee - I've never heard him called Fin-lay.

I hink in the uk it's pronounced fin-lee whichever way it's spelled, but in oz I'm pretty sure people would pronounce Finlay as fin-lay. So as pp said it depends where you are. I guess to avoid correcting people it would be easiest to go with Finley.

I believe Finlay was the original spelling. I personally would choose Finely though as i only know of one Finlay and she pronounces it Fin-lay.

I'm in the UK, and I would pronounce Finley as lee and Finlay as lay. We're considering Finley for our boys name. I also prefer the more traditional spelling of Finlay, but don't like the 'lay' sound. Especially as we have a DD called Esmé, which we already pronounce Es-may (although she often gets called Es-mee)! Couldn't bare to be shouting for "Es-may and Fin-lay" in the park etc...it just sounds wrong!

I prefer Finlay but if I'm honest, I'd actually spell it Findlay!

They should both be pronounced finlee, same word, it's traditionally Findlay, blond warrior.
randomly the south tends to use Finley, and north Finlay,.just check the top 100 boys names, in Scotland vs England. Anyway I have a Finlay, just because we have a Scottish last name, even though my husband had no direct Scottish family anymore! I'm from the south and I like it's not used as much..though I'm sure he'll have it spelt wrong his whole life!
We mainly call him Finn though, just to confuse it.
