Saturday 5th May.
Had a sweep booked at the local community hospital as a result of a frantic call to the midwife earlier in the week. I had GD, and was being left to go quite far over my due date despite having a baby that was consistently measuring on the 97th centile, leading me to concerns that he would get stuck on delivery and resulting in a distressing time for both of us. Jack had been delivered via EMCS, and a VBAC was very important to me, but only under the right circumstances and at no cost to the safety of me or our baby.
Anyway, there was a minor question mark over whether I should have the sweep, as it wasnt offered via my GD clinic, but it was offered by the MW when I rang. I think my conscience will need to live with this decision!
Regardless, I had the sweep and walked back home. My cervix had shortened nicely since my last visit and I was 2cm dilated. I later went to a children and baby market and felt a little unwell. My 2 mummy friends were very excited to hear I was feeling queasy and crampy!
When we returned home, I started getting contractions. They were lasting about a minute and were a minute apart, but in my infinite wisdom, I was waiting for them to space out to 5 minutes!
I phoned the hospital and they confirmed that I should go in, so we called my Mum, got Jack out of bed and made our way to the hospital. Mum and Dad insisted in coming out to chat to me, which I really couldve done without, but soon enough Jack was tucked up at theirs and we arrived at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading by 20:30.
We alerted them straight away to the fact I had GD and had some pre-expressed colostrum in case lo needed it when he was born. They said they would pick it up later. I was accessed and found to be 3cms dilated. I was also on the trace, babys heart rate was fine and he seemed happy. As they dont consider 3cms to be established labour, I was not yet transferred to Labour and Delivery, but kept in a side room in the assessment unit where I was hooked up to the trace again and given diamorphine and an anti-sickness jab. I also had a cannula put straight in, in case my scar ruptured.
Unfortunately, lying on the bed whilst on the trace for hours slowed my labour and when I was examined again, I was found to be 4cm, which was considered active labour, however my contractions had tailed off and had lost their intensity. I never made it to L&D as there was no room. We had a chat with the doctors and agreed to a C-sec as the only other thing they could do to speed up labour was to break my waters, which they would not do as the baby was not engaged and that action could result in possible cord prolapse. We then had to wait for the 6 hours after I had last eaten and while they saw to more urgent cases.
In the meantime, my contractions started back up again, with frequency and intensity. Another exam showed I was 5cms. I was then moved to L&D as this meant my circumstances had changed. There was still a wait as another woman needed her section first, but I then felt a gush and another exam discovered I was 6cms and my fore waters had gone. Despite this, lo was still not engaged, so the section went ahead.
Finley William was born at 18:40 on 6th May 2012. We dont know how much he weighed as it appears their guess at 9lb13oz was false due to them weighing in the towel he was wrapped in. They also neglected to put the colostrums I had expressed in the fridge so that was ruined and they failed to realise that my blood sugar needed monitoring.
