After 8 days of FF and a little expressing, I bought nipple shields and after a little persuasion, he latched! He doesnt take much milk, only stays on for about 5 mins each side but I think its because my flow is stop start. He gets bored and agitated if no milk is coming but when I express, there is around another 1-2oz.

Any advice on how I can make him stay latched for longer? BF is hard work, especially when he gets grisly and I give him a top up and he then wont settle. But knowing he latched and his getting my goodness is making me so happy :happydance:

We are sticking to FF during the night as he sleeps better on that and settles a lot better and daytime is dedicated to BF or expressed milk.

WHOOO HOOOOO!!!! Good for you. Well done!

You could try a breast compression to keep him on the job. Videos here: https://www.nbci.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=6&Itemid=13

Alternatively, supplementing at the breast using an SNS might help, as then baby gets food immediately available. Also your milk actually comes in 3-4 let downs over a single feed, and during the fallow periods when baby has to suck to stimulate the next let down, the SNS will keep baby on the job.
