I like reading stories that have lots of details so I'll include lots in this story so it might be a bit of a read.
I was due to be induced on the 6th July due to gestational diabetes. We called the hospital as requested at 6.30 am to see if they had a bed and they did so we set of to it. My last induction took 3 days but when things happened they happened fast so we had no reason to expect that this would be any different.
When we got there they put us on the monitor for a while and everything checked out fine. A lovely midwife named Michelle came over and explained all about the propess they'd be using. I did say that my consultant wanted them to try and break my waters first. She did a quick check and said that I was only 1cm dilated and my cervix was still very posterior. She popped the propess in and explained about the possibility of it falling out and being careful etc. After more monitoring we went for a quick walk and some lunch. We went back to the ward and I went to the loo....and the very thing I had been warned about happened an the propess fell into the loo. So I went back to my bed and told Michelle. Her and dh had great fun cracking jokes about the NHS and me fishing it out of the loo. She put another one in and I went back on the monitor. All was fine. She had to go as her shift finished. About an hr later I started to get some pains. They suddenly became very intense and there were a lot of them. The midwife put me back on the monitor and they were contractions and they were measuring off the scale and I was having between 4-6 every ten minutes. This worried the midwife who went and got a more senior one as they were worried I was hyper stimulated. I asked why that was a problem and they said that with that there was a chance of uterine rupture. They spoke to the consultant and the decision was made to remove the propess and take me down to delivery as I have a history of delivering very fast when things move on.
They took me down and I was examined again. I was only 2 cm but definitely contracting hard and fast. Eventually the contractions slowed down and after about 5 hrs and another examination the decision was made to put another propess in. Their reasoning was that I needed to dilate and this gave me the bast chance as they couldn't break my waters yet. Within an hr of it going back in I was hyper stimulated again and the contractions were worse. I was begging for pain relief and could feel myself getting very close to losing control. Again it was removed and I was examined. I was 3 cm and still very posterior. A consultant then made the decision that my waters would be broken but due to the Polyhydramnios this would be done in a controlled way in theatre the next morning as they weren't willing to do it a night without more experienced people being there. So at 1 am they made hubby and I some toast and tea and gave me a pethadine injection and we tried to rest.
The next morning it was confirmed my waters would be broken in theatre....due to the chance of cord prolapse I would be prepped as for a section....which meant I finally got an epidural. I could have kissed the anesthetist when that kicked in. Dh wasn't allowed into theatre for the waters being broken. He was told if they needed to go to section he would be called in. They got me in there and my nerves kicked in and I started to feel very sick and started to heave.....more drugs were pumped in. Next thing I could hear was what sounded like a waterfall.....my waters had been broken. They estimated I had over 3.5 litres. They applied fundal pressure so that his head went down and lessened the risk of cord proplapse. They got a consultant into scan and make sure that it was just his head down. Then they put me back onto the bed and wheeled me out of theatre. I started to feel weird again and said so to the midwife. Within seconds the anesthetist was there pumping drugs into the canula. I was rushed into recovery and put onto more oxygen and my bp taken. My bp had crashed and I was having real trouble even keeping my eyes open. They pushed through 3 bags of fluids before it came up to a safe level. When I came round enough I asked if anyone had told dh what was happening and they confirmed he had been told and as they knew I'd be in recovery for a while they had persuaded him to go get something to eat as he hadn't eaten for over 12 hrs at that point.
I eventually got taken back to my delivery room. As my waters had gone I was put on sliding scale for the gd and a syntocin drip to try and kick start my contractions. After half an hr the midwife started to look concerened and went and got another midwife to look at the trace from the monitor. She confirmed that even though I was now only getting 1 contraction every 10 minutes in over half of those there were small decels. The consultant came back in and said as they were small and not anything to worry about at the moment they could turn up the drip. The monitor showed that there was no increase in contractions but the decels were now every contraction. The consultant came back in and checked it out. She said in her opinion we had given it our best shot and that it was now to risky to continue. She wanted to go talk to another consultant to see what he thought. Within 10 minutes she was back and said that he agreed we needed the section. As I had been prepped for a section when my waters were broken it meant other than the epidural needing topping up I was good to go. We had about 10 minutes to let people know and I was taken back to theatre. Dh was given scrubs and told he would be collected when I was ready. So 5 hrs after my first visit I was back in theatre. Its weird that this time I really was relaxed about it all. I don't know if that was due to dh being there with me or the fact that the nurses and midwives in there where cracking jokes and making us laugh. The atmosphere was certainly more what I would want for a birth than the stressful experience it could have been. Within a few minutes of them starting we heard a little cry and the anesthetists assistant looked at the clock and said 18.34.....the little things made it special. Due to it being an emergency section as a matter of routine a peadiatrican was called so Finley was checked out and his apgar was 9 and then 10 so perfectly healthy. At my last growth scan he was estimated to weight 8lb 7....he came out as 7lb 15.5 ozs. They offered him to me to hold but there wasn't a lot of room and I had a lot of canulas in and I was worried about catching him with them so I told them to give him to dh......so to be sure I had seen him they held him right up to my face so I could have a look and a cuddle before he was given to dh.
I had been petrified of needing a section but when it came down to it it was wasn't as bad as I thought it would be......first night was definitely painful but they gave me plenty of painkillers and when they got me up the next day it was ok. He is 4 days old now and as long as I take the painkillers regularly and I do rest I am ok. Finley is a gorgeous little man who is very laid back and chilled out.
