First Communion Gifts?

Does anyone know what is typically expected of the Godparents for first communion (Catholic)? DH's god-daughter had hers today and we didn't know until about an hour before so we didn't go or get a gift or anything… I should know these things!

My god sons is coming up this month and I have been trying to think of a gift for ages. I am thinking maybe a watch but can't find anything I like. I think traditional gifts are crosses on necklaces, that sort of thing.

Typical gifts would be a bible (maybe personalised), a rosary, a little prayer book, a little cross on a chain. You could maybe get her a saint pendant of the saint she is named for?
