Hey Zoe,

Metronidazole in pregnancy... hmmmm
is a tough one because the studies that were carried out were on mice... I dont know if i would take itpersonally. i would say if you are unsure or unhappy go back to the GP or Pharmacist. x

I don't think i'd be happy taking it personally isn't that what they treat bv with aswell & i know you're not supposed to take that during pregnancy x

You don't want to leave an infection that's for sure, but like the ladies have said, go back to your doctor or see a pharmacist they are excellent when talking about meds, then you can ask your doc for some different ones. Remember, doctors are just people, if you're not happy with what they say or do don't be afraid to tell them. Big hugs xxxxxxx

Thanks ladies:-) the prescribing doc is my ob for baby so i would assume he wouldnt give me something dangerous to the baby?? I go in in a couple of hours for my first scan today so i will def be bringing it up!

I currently have bacterial vaginosis and two of the GP's at my surgery have said a big NO to Metronidazole.

They are contacting the gynae team to decide what is best to give me.

Erythromycin seems to be the only real fail safe antibiotic that Drs like to prescribe in pregnancy- though for a UTI i am unsure as to why this was the first choice?? Trimethoprim or maybe amoxcillin.....But again check with your dr xx

Oh I will have to be careful then, am allergic to erythromicin. Anyway definately bring it up I'm sure they wouldn't mind giving you a different one, after all it is better safe than sorry. Oh and don't forget your live yogurt while you're on them if you suffer from thrush while taking antibiotics, what a nuisance that can be! Good luck at your scan :D xxxx

Warm water with a little bit of table salt in (to bath in) is also good for thrush symptoms. O:)

Not too much or it dries out your skin- just a teaspoon full is enough- hope it helps! :)

Does anyone know if Doxycycline (think that is how you spell it) is safe during pg and would treat bv?

Only that is the only antibiotic (apart from metro) that doesn't give me thrush. the last time I had thrush from a different antibiotic I bled with it, it was awful....

I'm afraid doxycycline's not used during pregnancy. It can cause permanent discolouration of the baby's teeth, as well as bone problems.

Metronidazole's safe during pregnancy as long as high doses aren't used according to the BNF (British National Formularly- the source of all drug information for doctors in the UK).

Oh gosh, not good :(

I really am not sure what they will prescribe. BV is an bacterial infection and Metronidazole is great for it, such a shame we cannot take it.

Metronizadole is a big no no i'd say, i was given it with my first pregnancy anf subsequently went on to lose that baby, i was told i shouldnt have been given it because it goes straight into the mothers blood stream and attacks the featus as see;s it as the infection.......... Please get a 2d opinion x

I know what you mean, it can get absolutely dreadful, and the pain , you might benefit from taking acidophillus tablets rather than the yogurt, ask your doctor about it though, mine said yes it's safe but I don't like recommending someone take something without asking their doc just incase :hugs:

I agree with this post - I finished a course of Metronidazole about 3 weeks ago, prescribed by a surgeon and ok'd by a GP and madwife.

@ Zoesboots. I am curious what ended up being the solution. Did you take Metronidazole or another drug? I was prescribed Metronidazole today and uneasy taking it.

I'm taking Sulfamethoxazole for my UTI and it clearly says on the bottle do NOT use if pregnant or pregnancy is suspected...and I freaked out and called the pharmacy and she told me it was only contraindicated in late pregnancy, close to giving birth and that it was perfectly safe in early pregnancy.

Its all so confusing, I hope you manage to get something for your infection and it clears up quickly
