I've just been for my back to work meeting and they've basically said I can't go back part time for continuity reasons.

Now this would be all fine and dandy except one of the girls on mat leave was offered a part time role in the same department doing exactly the same job and has decided she doesn't want to go back.

It can be done, they just won't.

I don't think we can afford for me to not work at all. I'm really not sure what my options are other than looking for another job.

Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do?

Either speak to your hr team or acas and appeal the decision. Did you put your request in writing and have they formally replied in writing?

I would appeal. Find out what you can from the other girl and her situations. Ask them what their official 'business reason' is for refusing it.

This flow chart sets out the official process and all the time lines

I would appeal in writing stating something like 'please find enclosed my request for appeal, as per the statutory guidelines I look forward to hearing from you in blah blah blah'

I find that if your employer thinks you know what you are talking about, they are far less likely to try and take you for a ride.

Good luck!!

xx

They HAVE to have a sound business reason to decline your request. Appeal and make sure you show that you know what you're talking about otherwise they will take you for a ride. Citizens advice may be able to help.

Are you with a union? I would get onto them straight away if you can, my union are great and have sorted so many things for me
