Anna seems to get frustrated with my over-enthusiastic rate of let down... She doesn't need to suck - my breasts just squirt the milk out (much like a water feature of sorts!!) and it seems to get too much for her; she ends up complaining and spitting the milk out or choking on it :hissy: Is there anything I can do to make things easier for her? It's getting me a bit frustrated, so must be annoying as hell for Anna!

no idea hun hopefully sum1 b able to help ya soon x x x

express off the overactive letdown. When it slows, then latch her on :)

I have this too...

I have the same thing... I never knew it was overactive letdown. Thanks Margerle! I'll definitely express a bit before having Aspen suck.

I had this for about 2 months, but it did eventually settle down.

have a very fast let down, too!

she got irritated in the beginning, but now we are trained :hi:

pumping or hand expressing before

Thanks everyone :) I'll give it a go expressing before I feed her x

You could try expressing a little first...it won't last long. Your body will adjust.

Flow seems too much for her whatever I do

... I tried expressing some first, but that just starts the flow off, and then it won't stop! It literally pours out of me. Really quite odd to see. I don't want to express too much because Anna is a right guzzler and usually sucks me dry so I don't want her to be left with too little milk for her. She is however still getting frustrated with the overflow and occasionally she struggles with it, then either chokes, or appears to be wrestling with my boob, pushes it forcibly out of her mouth, then remembers why it was there and gets frustrated because she is hungry :dohh: Poor little lass - She's still trying to figure it all out, I think.

Have you tried feeding her more upright?

Even if you express some off the top to take care of the letdown, she'll get enough, because she'll stimulate production for whatever she needs. :)

And you might find within the next 4 weeks or so- your hormones will settle down and production will even out, and your overactive letdown may subside.

Hang in there mama ;)

Kaya would choke with my letdown for a good two months or so, but she learned how to handle it, and my milk settled down.

If it does flow too easily and fast, you may have to give in and express and bottle feed her.

feeding more upright might help her not to choke!

I tried this with Juleika as well!

Thanks girls.

It's frustrating for both of us but we are persisting, and she just keeps getting podgier and podgier so I can only assume she's getting enough! (Go Anna! :happydance: hehe)

It's just sad that it's such hard work for her and makes her choke or cry :( so any more advice on how to slow it down is really appreciated :)

A few of you have suggested feeding her more upright... What exactly do you mean by that? Sorry if that sounds dumb - didn't get much sleep last night and it seems to have had an effect lol  I'm not really with it today...

Don't know if this is what people meant but feeding her so she's looking down on your breast might help - prop her up on a few cushions so she's just above it. Also the more she's sitting up the easier it will be for her to get it down into her stomach if she can keep up with the flow!

It does get easier though - for the first few weeks I felt like I was going to be choking Sam forever - he'd start drinking, then let go, choke and get a faceful of spray all at once...he really wasn't too happy about it (was wondering how people manage to discreetly feed babies in public when I seemed to be choking and soaking him at every feed!). It's so much better now though - I'm not sure if my milk has settled down or he's got better at keeping up (or both) but he no longer chokes on it!

P.S. If she does choke it's ok to hold a clean towel or breast pad over it until the fountain stops! I thought I was wasting loads at first, and felt as if I should be latching him back on while it was still gushing everywhere (poor kid!) but it doesn't take long to stop, and your breasts will adjust to the amount needed so they won't be getting less than they need - I think you actually lose a lot less than it seems!)
