After reading this, which my brother sent me: https://www.edmontonjournal.com/health/Province+confirms+deaths/9356299/story.html (he lives in Edmonton) followed by the CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pdf/freeresources/pregnant/flushot_pregnant_factsheet.pdf

I am going to get the shot on Thursday.. my clinic says its completely safe to do so and I think I would like to take every caution! Sounds like a horrible flu.. And baby is vaccinated for a time after the birth too which protects them from the flu even on the outside :)

When I was expecting my first I actually posted about the flu shot. The year before I was pregnant my perfectly fit and healthy brother got the flu and so did I. It mutated as is common with the flu virus and we both developed the h1n1 virus (swine flu). Antibiotics, rest and chest xrays sorted me out. My brother wasn't so lucky. He developed total lung failure.
He spent a month in a come (missing xmas day, new year and his wifes birthday). He was a newly wed so this was really sad.
He then had to have a tracheotomy fitted and lost 4 stone in weight.

To cut a long story short miraculously he survived but its left its mark.

When I was pregnant people were questioning if the shot was safe. I just asked myself if I could fight h1n1 again and more importantly could my unborn child???? No. So I got the shot. Ive now got a perfectly healthy one year old who got her first cold at 13 months.

Sorry this is a huge post lol. Just wanted to share my experience with both the illness and the shot xx

No thank you for posting that.. I am so sorry you two went through a lot... wow your poor brother.

If both the CDC and my specialist fertility doctor tell me its perfectly safe and recommended, that's all I need to know. Its a really dangerous strain....

Sometimes, people get sick from the flu and sometimes, people get sick from the shot. My doc says not to get the shot before 12 weeks. I suggest you do your research and learn what's best because this is your body and your pregnancy, and I wish you good luck and good health!

I just got my first ever flu shot yesterday too! One of my good friends just left urgent care with a diagnosis of H1N1…I'm nauseous enough…I wouldn't want to be more ill!

This flu isn't like all the other flus that ppl complain of getting sick from the shot. This flu hits pregnant women and morbidly obese people with the worst effects. I had h1n1 the first time it came around and had 40% capacity in my L lung and 60% in my other. It kicks even healthy people's arses. I highly recommend listening to infectious disease experts on this matter rather than people here or even family doctors. Thank you Petzy for the articles & fact sheet. It's not something to mess with.

I had the flu jab on Monday. My midwife and the nurse said it was perfectly fine to have before 12 weeks x

My doctor told me to wait until 12 weeks if possible but if flu season started before I got to that point, to come in and get it straight away! I ended up getting it at 11+1... just didn't want to chance waiting any longer!

Couldn't agree more! The factsheet says it all...
