Re weaning. My son is nearly 5 months, heis 18lbs (hes v long). Hes shown an interest in food for a while and hes now trying to grab food from us and gettng v upset when he sees us eating. He makes chewing motions with his mouth. Hv said to wait till he is 6 months to wean but I feel hes ready. He also has reflux but is controlled by gviscon.

Wht would u do?

When did u wean lo?

do what you feel is best. i weaned at 19 weeks because i felt my son was ready. its totally your decision cause you know him best. i found HV contradicted themselves. some are for 4 months weaning others say not before 6 months.

I'd wait until at least 24 weeks.
In the mean time you could give him some fruits/veggies once a week or so.. to chew on.

i've been told by hv that i can start weaning at 17 weeks as lo has reflux and was not drinking much milk, she said early weaning can sometimes help with this...!

It's a hot topic really. A lot of people are anti-HV in that they know hardly anything about actual parenting, but most on here are anti-early weaning.

In this instance I will say try your best to stick to the guidelines. They are there for a reason afterall x

Does he sit up?
Give him a half a banana and see what he does with,if he can take it to his mouth and bite it then it can be a sign he is ready for weaning. When you are eating would he not be happy to just chew on a wooden spoon or something?
I waited till 6 months with my daughter but I weaned Owen at 4 months 3 weeks.

Ignore the HV. The guidelines are exactly that - a guide. And they are supposed to be suitable for all babies across the whole world.

Do what you feel is best for your baby.

i think ur lo is over 17 weeks so it i fine if u think its best. whats to say ur lo turns 6 months and something just goes and changes bang there ready for solids?? i think its your opinion on early weaning hun.

As I understand it, their gut isn't mature enough to handle solids without getting damaged to some extent before 6 months, though obviously it's a gradual maturation and not overnight on the day they turn 6 months. I'd try giving him something to chew on while you eat like a spoon, and waiting a while longer if you can. He'd probably be fine with early weaning, but having intestinal issues myself I'd not wish them on anyone and they are a risk when weaning early.

we started blw at 5 months but i dont think id start tw until 6 as with blw if they arnt ready they wont be able to eat anything anyway

The taking an interest in you eating and making chewing motions are just normal development things and don't necessarily indicate being ready for weaning, they tend to start taking more interest in whatever you are doing at this age. I agree that blw would be a hood way to go as that way he can't eat things he is not ready for.

Well i weaned my eldest at 4 months as that was the normal back then, prior to that i worked in a nursery where all babies were weaned from 4 months all TW obviously as you cant BLW at that age and there was no such thing back then anyhow... By the time i had my second daughter weaning guidelines had change and i heard about BLW but i still TW at 5 months.

Personally i think all babies are different so if you want to wean then wean and even if you do TW .....if a baby doesnt want to eat a baby wont eat believe me. lol x

How is he sleeping and in between meals? I started weaning at 19weeks as my LO went from feeding every 4 hours with one night feed to feeding every 2hours with 2 night feeds. He was grumpy and hungry all the time and it wasn't making either of us happy to delay weaning. I waited almost 2weeks to check it wasn't just a growth spurt. We are 2weeks into it and hes loving it, his Tongue thrust had gone and he knew what to do with the food so he was definitely ready. You could always try some baby rice and see if he knows what to do with it. Xx
