I have recently moved from bf to ff and on the carton it only states prep instructions based on making up 7oz-but my lo only seems to take 5oz and I don't want to keep wasting formula!

If it's 7 scoops for 7 oz of water, then is it common sense that I can just make up 5 oz with 5 scoops/5oz of water? Just wanted to be on the safe side, hope I don't sound idiotic :-/

Yes, it's one scoop per 1 oz or 30 ml (depending on how you measure, whether ml or oz). It's weird they don't say that on the box! I guess they just assume all babies at that age should eat a certain amount (or more likely, they want to make you think you should be giving them 7 oz so you waste more and therefore have to buy more!).

Thanks for that. I think they just assume by that age it's 3×7oz a day (that's what is 'recommended' on the box). But it's totally silly they don't offer advice on variations!
