hi all

i was just wondering if i should move over to follow on milk as gertie is nearly 6 months old.

i read up about it and it says that it contains more iron and vitamin d.

i woas wondering if this would be a good idea just fo the iron benefit as my and my mother suffer with really low iron levels and are on constant iron tablets.

i know they can stay on number 1 until they are 1 but i have had a leaflet through from cow & gate and they outline all the extra benefits follow on milk has.

i'm so confused and dont know what to do for the best.

sorry about the long post

for maddi i just stayed with her normal milk (from 2weeks till 1year she had aptamil hungry baby) as she eats a really varied diet and get's all the vitamins and minerals she needed from that. i spoke to my hv too and she said she thought it was fine to stay on it. i would say if your little one is eating loads of different things, then stick with her normal milk, if not, you might want to change for the extra benefits :)

I changed Chloe to follow on as she is vegeatrian so is possibly lacking iron in her diet, plus she has not changed to cow's milk now she is one, we never intended her to, so follow on milk was the obvious thing for us as she can have it until she is 3 ish.

Its entirely up to you, changing shouldnt hurt, although it can cause constipation

On the plus side, follow on milk is usually cheaper and included in offer whereas stage 1 isnt!

I thought that follow on milk gave greater concentration of nutrients in a smaller volume of milk...but maybe I'm wrong (it can happen) ;)

my lo stayed on stage one till he was a year and moved to cows milk. i was told that if weaning is going well then there is no need, but as someone pointed out if you think lo may be lacking in vitamins / iron from their diet then it may be a good idea, personally i didnt bother as my son has always been a good eater, personal choice i guess , there is no right or wrong answer :)
