I am finally getting my appetite back at 12 weeks. I met my husband at Panera today for lunch. It was after I finished my greek salad that I realized I was not supposed to have feta! I am feeling very guilty. Does anyone know if the feta from Panera is pasteurized and therefore okay to eat? Any info would be great!

try not to worry about it to much, i have had things im not suppose to (lunchmeat) because tim hortons sandwich was the only thing i wanted to eat. im sure you and baby will be fine :)

in canada you can eat feta as its made with pasteurized milk :) Most cheeses unless its a specialty cheese is ok. If you look up their website you could email them and ask.

We are told feta is perfectly fine to eat here, so I wouldn't worry about it. I've been eating plenty of it. I would imagine anything served in a restaurant would be pasteurized anyway. Man, I miss Panera bread though! I used to eat there all the time when I visited my mom in the U.S.

Thanks everyone. I will email them just in case but I appreciate you squashing some of my fears!

Whats wrong with lunch meat?

lunch meat and soft cheese can carry listeria. Pregnant woman have compromised immune sytems and are more susceptible to catching listeria which can be dangerous for the baby.

Mmmm feta, there's some in my fridge which won't be there by this time tomorrow now I've read this!

if your heat the lunch meat up to a steam its safe to eat.

I'm pretty sure restaurants in the us have to carry a warning if their cheese is unpasturised the same as they carry shellfish warnings?
However feta is pasteurised so try not to worry about it. I bought some this week. To be called feta it has to follow a certain process of being made and therefore you are safe.

So is this any lunch meat or just certain ones? This sucks. Sandwiches are the only thing I've been able to eat lately.

In regards to the lunch meat, you're not supposed to eat it because of listeria so I've been having fried bacon sandwiches. I'm sure that's ok? When I was younger I had a client tell me about how she lost her baby at 39 weeks because she ate a cocktail sausage from the deli and got food poisoning. It was pretty extreme and I'm not trying to frighten you but that story stuck with me and I try to avoid deli stuff in general. Friend feta is supposed to be okay.

I heard that you can have that kind of sandwich meat bought in a packet but not from the deli because if the differences in production safety

That sounds like it would make sense. Plus it wouldn't be sitting there in a bowl at a deli for 2-3 days...

Feta is from pasteurized milk everywhere in the world nowadays.

Thanks all. Three days later and the baby is fine and I have no signs of problems. I love feta and I am glad to know that as long as it is pasteurized it is safe.

Hello - I think Feta is okay - This is what the NHS says: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx

As long as it is from pasteurised milk. My friend's husband is a dairy farmer and she didn't realise you weren't allowed un-pasteurised milk for the first 12 weeks - she'd been drinking it straight from the cow!! She was fine, but think it is best to avoid anything from un-pasteurised milk.

In the UK, we're told it is okay to eat cured/lunch meats such as parma ham.

A x
