I looked in Asda and Tesco for yams without success. Has anyone found any in the UK?

I only find them at the Asian grocers together with the plantains which are very yummy... never seen them in Asda or Tesco

I read that yams increase the chances of twins... and I read it in several different, unrelated locations. So, eat carefully! :)

Is this anything to do with that small village where nearly all women gave birth to twins?

true yams are not commonly found in europe or north america.
Sweet potatoes yes.

In many countries....people interchange the worm YAMS with SWEET POTATO
Yams are actually found mainly in Asia, Africa, Oceania and can actually be difficult to find in Europe and North America.

Yams have more of a brown skin with a whitish inner, while sweet potatoes have a more brownish/red skin with a more orange inner.

It is actually Yams that are supposed to help in fertility.

I got my info from my Naturopath, and it is actually Sweet Potatoes that help with Ovulation. Yes, Yams and Sweet Potatoes do get confused, but it'd definitely sweet potato and I'm pregnant now, so I know it worked for me!

Got sick of sweet potatoes though!!

Oh and I too heard to not eat peas..

But, like everythign in life, moderation.. Who knows..

Yes! The village is Igbo-Ora in Nigeria - 'the land of twins'! Yams supposedly contain a natural hormone phytoestrogen which can stimulate the ovaries to produce an egg from each side causing twins. However, some researchers believe the genetic history/background of the Yoruba tribe may play a role ... so they are not completely sure just how much is attributable to the yams...

Well thankfully I love yams...yum...and the possible side effect is very welcome!
