Although we won't be weaning my LO for a good few months, I'm starting to think about what we will do. Do people give their babies foods that they themselves don't like? I'm eager for her to experience a range of flavours and don't want her to grow up fussy, but I'm also conscious that it could be expensive buying her things we don't like when she will only eat a mouthful or two. For example, both of us hate salmon and avocado. I know they are good for her, but dislike the idea of waste.

If you were a really fussy eater with a limited diet, I would say yes, buy things you don't like in small quantities to let her try. However, if you're a normal eater with just a few things you don't like, I really don't see the point. If she doesn't try avocado or salmon until she's older it won't make her fussy. If you want to go down the road of offering all of the things you don't normally buy, you will be having a different meal every day for the rest of your life! As long as your usual meals are varied and interesting, she won't miss out by not trying a few things you don't like.

I don't eat fish but wanted to give Lo the chance to try it. We have a little fish van and I asked the guy to keep a small piece for baby. He really liked it so I buy it and chop it up into small portions. I freeze what I don't use. Also if I'm trying Lo with something new I'll keep my eyes peeled in supermarket for foods on offer. I got an avocado so cheap as it was almost out of date. If you have a local market they are great as you can buy just a single piece of fruit / veg. Helps keep the cost down. Is only buy food we dont eat if I can get it in small quantity / good price.

Fortunately there are only a few foods that we both dislike, so I'm glad that it is ok to leave a few foods out. I'll keep an eye out for offers.

I don't like fish but LO loves it! we had a can if mackerel (my mums idea of my joke) in our cupboard and I mashed it up with lots potatoes and she loves it! But it does make me gag everytime I feed it to her (made loads, and froze portions!)!! I agree, keep an eye out for 'last chance' offers in the supermarkets, we very often but fruit and veg on the day it's going off and it can save u almost 90% of the cost; then feed it to LO that day.
