For those of you with common names... ** UPDATE - he's here! still choosing, help pls

My name is Ashley and it was super common in 1985 if I am not mistaken it made top 5. Honestly, I didn't mind at all. I was often in classes with more than one Ashley (I can remember being in a class with 3 for several years in a row actually) and being referred to by my name plus an initial, but for us it was like being a part of a name club lol. I didn't start to resent my name until my teens and I think that was just a teen angst thing and nothing to do with popularity or the name itself. Pick the name you love regardless of popularity. Your child won't be scarred for life, and once they hit adulthood it literally doesn't matter anymore.

I would say then most popular name at my childrens school is Niamh.
my son and daughter have common names according to the polls but only 1 other Matthew and no other Rubys.

Well, ladies... it is a boy, and now husband is pushing for Alexander (nn Alex) but I'm shying away. I can't convine him on less common names that I like, though. Alex or varients will be about 1 / 100 boys in the US according to social security data. Likely more popular, though unknown by how much, in the areas where we we will live. Here's hoping he's ok with that!

Any last-minute convincing arguments yays or nays as to common names for boys before we fill out the birth certificate?

I like Alex! And I don't know any in real life :flower:

Congrats on your baby boy! Alexander is such a nice, strong name. Cute nicknames too! What if you name him Alexander, but call him Xander (Zander) right off the bat as his daily name? That way he has a safe, traditional name to fall back on (Alexander) - but yet a more fun, trendy, unique nickname (Xander)?

All the Alex's I know are 15 and above (I know three) but I haven't come across a little Alex in any playgroups :)

Well, we've decided!

Trying out Alex for over a day at the hospital to get a feel-husband really liked it, I liked it, things were going well. But we wanted to double check our name list before we committed.

Hubby actually found one he really liked, even better than Alexander because it made a good sibset and was less common. (I didn't think popularity was too important to him.)

So, without further adieu:

Everett Todd.

Everett is about 1/1000 compared to 1/100 with Alex variations. It also goes well with big sister Vivienne. It's gaining in popularity (~#129 in US in 2013) and fits recent naming trends so I don't think it will be too unusual.

Todd is to honor my brother who will never be a father but is a proud uncle. :)

Everett is a great choice. It has recently come to my attention that I like names with a v in them....not beginning with v though...so I like it a lot. Nicely done, and congrats!

Ooh Everett is great and it goes really well with your DD's name :)

Congratulations on your son and I love his name.
