Finally, a good move if it all goes ahead!

i agree too. Everyone that i know thats been out of work (with the exception of 2) have worked their ass off to find another job (there were just none for ages so it wasnt lack of trying), and tbh they probs would of found it good coz it would have got them out the house instead of waiting for job replies.

This is great news.

If someone is prepared to work voluntarily for a charity and still has a day job then the least someone on job seeking benefits can do is help the community and put a little bit back :)

I don't think it's a good move at all. We currently have something like 5 people going for every job vacancy and that's before the 1.5 million predicted job losses in the public and private sectors. Why should the other 4 have to work for a month for £2.16 per hour? Well below the minimum wage. It is the thin end of the workhouse wedge.

This was already explored when Labour were in power and, amongst other things, it was found to be detrimental to the ability of those people to look for work, so rather defeated the object.

Well dont they still get their benefits as usual, and the job they do whilst seeking a real job is only temporary, something to make them feel useful and in a routine. Why shouldnt people work for their benefits even if its a only a couple of hours a day.

This scheme isn't a couple of hours a day though, it's a 30 hour week which at £65 pw works out at £2.16ph, well below the minimum wage. It should be illegal.

There are plenty of volunteering opportunities available for people wanting to improve their skills or feel useful, much better for developing relevant skills too as there's volunteering in many many different ways.

think its a great idea, not sure of details, do you have to have been unemployed for a long time

will they cover child care while you are forced to work for those 2 weeks as the money from JSA just wont cover it. Its one thing looking for work and having a friend look after LO for a couple of hours while you have the interview, completely another having to find child care for a couple of weeks because you have to work or lose your JSA.
