Hi,

I have PCOS and have been ttc since Jan 2006, back in 2006 we did Clomid for 7 cycles only ovulating on the very first cycle, during taking Clomid i did not have scans for monitoring, the only thing the gynae did was got me to have a day21 test every cycle to see if i was ovulating and obv then a HPT, so no monitoring for OHSS or anything. I'm no longer under any gynae/consultant.

I am on CD12 and did Soy this cycle for the first time, i don't usually have cycles other than 1-2 times a year.

My question is:

I found some Clomid in my cupboard and its still in date, if this cycle fails, on my next cycle whenever that may be do you think its safe to use the Clomid without medical supervision, because as i say i never had monitoring anyway?...what would you do?. I know with PCOS i am at a higher risk of OHSS and also it didn't make me ovulate before but i keep thinking what if....?.

Thanks x

The sensible part of my brain says its not wise but all others scream 'just do it!" If they weren't monitoring you anyway! ;)

Hi there!
I know I ovulate on 50mg, and have chosen to do clomid unsupervised.
I fell pregnant 2 years ago on clomid without the dr's help, but lost the bub at 7 weeks, I am now doing clomid again.
I would not advise someone to go it alone if they are uneducated on this drug,
but I would say this...
Get educated, research, read, watch and learn as much as you can about this medication as you can. Track your bbt, AND use opk's if you can. I have had no problems doing it on my own, and have chosen to do it for various personal reasons. Good luck!!

I just wanted to say aswell, that when I was being supervised by a doc, I did actually hyperstimulate, and once you have taken the tablets and your body starts to hyperstimulate, there is no amount of supervision that is going to stop it! However, I know for certain, that if you are prone to OHSS like me, and you take clomid earlier in your cycle than days 5-9, then you are almost begging for hyperstimulation.
I took 25mg from day 2-7, which made my ovaries shoot out heaps of lower quality eggs. Later I did my own research and learned that if you wait just a few days before taking it, those lower quality eggs die off, leaving only one or two good quality eggs to ovulate, which avoids the OHSS.
So in essence, I hyperstimulated on 25mg days 2-7, yet had a perfect ovulation on 50mg days 5-9. I hope I have explained that right...lol

Dreamofabean - I'm struggling with the "just do it" parts of my brain too :).

Gunnabeamumma - Thanks hun, what you've said is really helpful. When i was doing it supervised i was taking it CD2-6, but after what you have said if i try it on my own i will do CD5-9. Soy i have taken CD3-7, does Soy carry the same risks, do you know?, i'm assuming so as it works the same way as Clomid.

I am not sure about soy, because I only tried it one cycle and it made me extremely moody, but did nothing of any benefit. However it was only one cycle and I do not know nearly enough about it.

while i was waiting to be prescribed my clomid, a friend gave me her last months supply (she got pregnant) and i took it. thats the cycle i got a bfp on. i'd do it again in a heartbeat. i can't advise you what to do - thats your decision to make. but i did it and i don't regret it.
