Full Body X-Ray at airport? Are they mental?

oh and no pat down either just walked through the normal metal detector thing while the rest of the family went through the body scanner

I never thought of that! We are off on honeymoon straight after the wedding (see sig), I was worried about the long flight but I never even thought about the xray! Can you opt not to have it? I would much rather be frisked than risk my bubba's health!

If you are flying from Heathrow or Manchester you can opt out, but you will not be allowed to fly.

DfT, BAA and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists deem the machines safe for use while pregnant.

Hmmmm, yet people are still disputing it and saying that any level of radiation in concentrated exposure is bad......I wonder..........

People are still saying that the MMR vaccine causes Autism, that mobile phones or laptops are going to give us cancer or cause miscarriages, that global warming isn't 'manmade'... go figure!

The difference being that these things have been studied at length. There hasn't been enough time to accurately study the effects of backscatter radiation on the human body in concentrated doses like in these machines.

I'm not saying it's necessarily bad, I'm just saying I'd like more information before I subject *my* baby to it. Or my body, pregnant or not.

That is true, but we have had years to study the effcts of other types of radiation and x-ray on the human body and these subject us to far less raditation.

Because we live in a litigous culture now, sadly, these things are not taken lightly by companies.

Going through airport security is NOT the same as having an xray done. The radiation is totally a different level. The airport screener is more along the lines as the same amount of radiation the sun emits....yet no one seems to be freaking out about that. Secondly they don't do a totally invasive pat down....they use a wand and it's quick, non-invasive and non humiliating. Pregnant women fly everyday and its no big deal.

Hurray! Once again, you have said something ridiculously stupid and inaccurate. (Are you a troll who has fun spreading misinformation?)

They most certainly DO do an invasive patdown! You are very, very wrong about that. Please do some freakin' research or maybe watch the news or read a newspaper. The new TSA regulations about opt-out pat-downs make them invasive. They touch your genitals and breasts. It's not the old "gently brush with the back of your hands", it's now "push until you meet resistance."

It's invasive on purpose to make people think twice about opting out of the body scanners.

And as for the dangerousness of the scanners, that has not been proven. The TSA and the manufacturers of the scanners are the ones who said the propaganda line about "no more than ten minutes of sunshine's worth of radiation." Do you think that maybe they have something to gain in making people think they're safe?

There's a growing body of scientists who are very concerned about the radiation effects. Scientists who study radiation and it's effects on the body.

Your posts drive me insane. First you tell people not to go to Planned Parenthood because they'll try and talk you into an abortion and won't give you medical care (WRONG), and now this crap? I can't tell if you're actually stupid or doing this because you're a troll who enjoys spreading incorrect information to pregnant women.

BOTH were based on actual experiences! #1 I just flew less than a month ago (when did you fly last?) and there was no invasive pat down.....just a wand. If you stuff your pants with crap that's gonna set the wand off then yes you will get a pat down. If people are getting groped that's an abuse of the system....not the standard that everyone experiences.
Secondly I went to planned parenthood in high school as part of a research project in which they told me I was preggers, showed me the test and tried to sell my an abortion. Had never had sex in my life. I DID not tell the poster she wouldn't receive medical care, I just don't recommend it. My opinion and my experience.
No, I'm not a troll trying to spread incorrect information....in fact quite the opposite. For your information I have been a nurse for 5 years and am SICK SICK SICK of seeing people worrying over the most pointless ridiculous stuff. Oh my gosh my temp dropped. Ah, I ate a slice of deli meat. I think I hurt my baby cuz I had sex. Seriously.....people need to lighten up and realize that the human body was made to birth babies. Yes, some great research has been done to protect our babies. And on things such as scanners they can't say they are 100% safe until they do human research, which is illegal and unethical! People really need to put stuff into perspective....you have a higher chance of killing your baby in a routine car accident due to the seat belt than you do harming your child in an occasional airport scanner.

I flew two weeks ago. My husband flew home on Friday. You were wanded at the METAL DETECTOR, you were not selected for a random backscatter full body scan. They wand you at the METAL DETECTOR. If you are selected randomly, you are asked to go through a fullbody scan. If you elect NOT to go through the full body scan, you are then GROPED.

TSA pay-down leaves traveler covered in urine
TSA Sexual Assault
Man Told He'd Face $10,000 fine if now allowed to be groped

This is just three stories. There's a lot more. Sexual abuse survivors are having breakdowns after being touched by the TSA. You are talking about being wanded at the metal dector, NOT the opt-out pat-down.

And I don't know why a high school research project would involve you trying to procure an abortion. Your story is bizarre- how did you pass a pregnancy test if you had never had sex? Why would a high school research project involve you trying to get an abortion? Did you go to a very religious high school with some sort of right-wing agenda?

PLANNED PARENTHOOD DOES NOT FORCE ABORTIONS ON PEOPLE. They are an excellent provider of low-cost healthcare to women who cannot otherwise afford it.

I'm glad theres people who think it's not invasive but I do. As per new TSA regulations they touch you by hand and I really don't want any strangers hands cupping my breasts, I know it is to see if I'm hiding anything but that feels so wrong and inappropriate.

I know The Daily Show is not a legitimate news source however he did show a clip on loop of a TSA agent doing a pat down on the woman. I was uncomfortable just watching. The hands had to go down the middle of the chest, checked the sides and cupped the breasts and this is standard. This is what they are supposed to be doing.

I watched a story on the news a few days ago. The reporter used his cell phone to tape his daughter (who was 3) getting a pat down. She was screaming and crying and begging the agent to stop touching her. To her it was the bad kind of touch parents are always warning their children about.

Aren't you just full of bizarre assumptions??? No, my research was about what drives for profit businesses....and this was only one of many businesses involved. Others involved for profit hospitals and standard testing within them versus non-profit hospitals and medical centers. I didn't go in trying to "try to get an abortion" and yes, I too am wondering how I passed a pregnancy test if I had never had sex.....makes you wonder now doesn't it!!!

Your story sounds very true and not at all made-up.

I flew from Canada to the US and back last week. I was selected for the random search. I was asked if I wanted to go through the full body scan or have the pat down. The lady doing the search wispered to me that if she was pregnant should would not go in the body scan. So I went for the pat down. It was a complete body pat down, but it didn't bother me. It was done by a woman, and I would rather that then someone with a bomb or gun getting on the flight with me.

While I was away, I was watching the news and they had a story about the full body scan. It said flight crews shouldn't be going through these scans, as they are new and not enough research on long term effects on the body have been done. So if flight crews shouldn't be going through them, what about the rest of us?

The difference between flight crew and us is that the crew would need to go on an almost daily basis for years at a time. With any amount of radiation, however small, after frequent scans that can add up to thousands in number in a relatively short amount of time. Some repercussions may occur. It's only to be expected.

I on the other hand, wouldn't be in the least bit worried about having the body scan, as chances are I'd only end up having one during to course of a pregancy as I don't fly all that often.

I only say this because I had both a chest x-ray and a body CT scan during the first couple of weeks of this pregnancy, before I knew I was pregnant, and I'm having a h&h pregnancy.

If you think about the amount of radiation I would have been exposed to during an x-ray and going through the "doughnut", the body scan is nothing in comparison.

I think the worry over the radiation exposure is just us pregnant women doing what we do best during pregnancy...and that's worry...over every little thing that might pose ANY kind of threat, however minute or relatively insignificant.

I along with many others, fly multiple times a month. They are saying they don't know the long term effects, so what is the difference if you go through it a few times, or if you go through it daily, if they dont know? I don't like the idea of going through it pregnant or not.

I'm a Veterinary nurse, and my OB has told be to try not to preform the xrays, and if I do to make sure I'm covered in the protective clothing. I was also at the dentist a few weeks ago, and they wouldn't do xrays on me because I was pregnant.

There seems to be differences in opinion, depending on the area people live. From what I have read in this thread, in the UK lead protective clothing is not used. Here when you have a xray, every part of the body not being xrayed is covered in protective blankets.

at the end of the day this is getting way out of hand
ozzie hunny if you really dont want to go throught the scanner give your airport a call and ask them what their procedures are for pregnant women.. they will have to have policies and procedures for pregnant women flying and if they say its fine then air and issues you have with it and they may ofer something else :flower:
