My DS is 5.5 weeks old. I moved on to bottles at 3 weeks and he was happy and content to begin with and took the bottle well. A feed would take approx 20 mins and I used dr brown bottles.

Over the last week he has got fussier and fussier feeding. He takes the first 1.5 oz calmly and then cries throughout the remainder coming on and off the bottle. He takes forever to wind and we add colief at every feed. It takes between 45mins to over an hour to get about 4oz down every feed and he seems quite distressed and cries and kicks a lot throughout.. It's even worse during the night feeds.

Any ideas what the problem might be? I am considering trying the medium flow teats in case he is getting frustrated at the flow..

Thanks for any advice.

Yes I would defo try upping the teat flow to rule that out first. xxx

is he showing signs of reflux?? it could be trapped wind, or maybe try another bottle, my DD was on mam for 5 months which were hell. now on avent and a happy little lady

Could be reflux or cows milk protien intolerence. My son got like this at the same age (he was already on gaviscon for reflux), then he started bringing up feeds, we ended up diagnosed with a CMPI and he was put on Neocate. Issues were solved almost immediately however, at 14 weeks, he occasionally takes a 4 oz bottle but usually only 3oz and sometimes I have trouble getting 1-2oz into him. He is gaining weight at a reasonable speed and we have come to the conclusion he doesn't really like milk (he much prefers pears (weaning early on medical advice before anyone comments!) I hae given up worrying about the quantity of milk he is having so long as he is happy, healthy and gaining weight.

I would have a read up and see if he has any other symptoms of reflux and/or CMPI as they quite often come hand in hand, and see if any of it fits. Either way if you're worried see your GP, I wouldn't trust a HV after mine dismissed my son's issues (including threads of blood in his dirty nappies).

We are using cheapie Boots standard bottles, went up to medium teats and are now on fast flow, and they have been better than any of he expensive brands :) Shame I had to go through all of the expensive ones first before trying these! Your son sounds just like mine was at that age (my God...am I really saying that already lol) so trust your instincts! Let us know how you get on xxx

Just a thought, it could be reflux, my eldest had this and every feed was horrible, he would arch his back and scream yet still wanted the milk. If the teats don't work take him to the doc and see if they can give him something for it if thats what it is xxx

Well tried the faster flow teats and he is much better and now taking 4-5oz in about 20mins. He seems more content..

Thanks everyone for replying x
