Hiya, Wondered if anyone had any advice for a newly diagnosed GD lady. My sister had her GTT last week and they called to say they need to see her as her results were high. She is due to go in on Monday to discuss a diet and get a blood testing kit.
So atm she is a bit in limbo, not knowing what her results are, and not knowing what to do or not to do. We are gathering she needs to lower her sugar intake. So we've advised to not have sugary drinks/foods etc, but being preg she still has those chocolate cravings! She was a big lucozade drinker so shes stopped that. My question is really is she to follow a normal type 2 diabetics regime, we have family members with it so kind of know the drill, but if anyone has any tips on where those sugar fixes could come in that are safe etc would be great

Hi :) I had GD when i was pregnant.
Basically cut out white versions of breads/pasta/rice etc, change to wholegrains. Lots of cereals are loaded with sugar, i wasn't able to tolerate many carbs for breakfast, used to eat things like toast with scrambled egg/sausages etc.
Also cut out the sugary drinks like you said, stick to no added sugar versions, diet drinks etc, sugar free jelly worked for me when craving something sweet, or a small piece of fruit, fruit is usually fine when eaten with a meal. It takes around 2 weeks for the body to get used to having no sugary/sweet things.
xx

It's very strange but for me eating wholegrain foods and no sugar cereal like plain shreddies and ready break has caused my blood sugar to rocket. I've found that small amounts of potato, rice or pasta however has no effect and gives me a good blood sugar level when combined with protein and veg. I took the dietician's advice and tried a boiled egg with a small wheat free muffin or soya linseed bread for breakfast and my blood sugar levels have been great. I think like Sarah10 says above, I too find it difficult to process carbs first thing. Am just so bloody sick of eggs now! I only drink low sugar drinks and loads of water, fresh pink grapefruit juice which has been my favourite drink since pregnancy is now a no no, as are the huge portions of fruit I would normally consume on a daily basis (although I was going a bit bonkers for clementines with my cravings I must admit)! I was told it's very much trial and error and what works for some people does not necessarily work for others. Hope all goes well for your sis x

Thanks for the advice Ladies. She been back to the hospital to get results and it wasn't majorly high but higher than it should be 8.8 so they are not overly concerned. just has to monitor her blood sugar 4 times a day keep a record and go back in 2 weeks for follow up appointment and a growth scan. They said can't even be sure it is GD so she just needs to be careful in case. I brought her diabetic chocolate but its wasn't met with much excitement lol

diabetic chocolate is vile lol. Try options hot chocolate, it gives just enough of a hit.

Adding protein to breakfast can help ward off those highs that cereal and milk can cause too

I switched my breakfast to eggs and toast and my post breakfast test is probably the most steady, good number I get all day.

in the uk you can buy burgen soya and linseed bread in any main supermarket. Very low GI and less carbs per slice than any other bread. Aproved by many diabetics. And chocolate only the 70% or higher. Not many carbs in those.
