I've seen a few good GD threads here, but haven't really came across anyone with my issues. I was diagnosed with GD when I was 24 weeks. I had expected it because my aunt had it and diabetes runs in the family (my cousin who is also pregnant has it as well) Anyways so I was supposed to talk to a dietician about a special diet an what not, but no one ever got a hold of me, so for the past three weeks i've been doing it with just what i know (like i said it runs in the family) and with what i could find online. My sugars have dropped since to a more manageable level ( i know the UK uses a different system that i don't know how to convert to) but my fasting sugars in the morning have been avg 110, and two hours after brkfast lunch and dinner have been between 75-130. So i had an appt today told my doc i haven't seen a consult and did what i could with what i knew. I told him my numbers and he said he wants to put me on insulin shots! I know that those numbers are not high enough for insulin shots. my cousins number are way more out of wack and she is unable to control hers thru diet and they have her on pills. I told the doc i am not comfortable taking insulin shots, to which he replied "I am the doctor, and you already know how to give yourself shots. Better to control this now." I told him that just because I have experience in taking those shots doesn't mean I should have them and its not out of control. I think he is just crazy and adamant about insulin even if the patient doesn't need it. My son is measuring perfect, fundal height was 27 inches exactly, his heart beat was strong and when I saw him it was beating away. I think i should get a second opinion.

This doctor also mentioned that I have gained too much weight since my last appt. I gained 3 lbs since three weeks ago that is a pound a week. I lost 5 lbs in my trimester and have overall gained 6 lbs since my starting weight. I am a bigger girl and understand that it is not ideal for a plus size woman to gain too much during pregnancy, but is 6 lbs in 27 weeks too much?

Hi hun, hope you are well :flow:

I don't know much about the weight gain as I too haven't been given much information by the professionals. However, I did find this converter for the blood levels: https://bloodindex.net/Blood_Sugar_Converter.php I hope you don't mind me asking, but I was the same when I was first diagnosed....... have you been advised to test 2 hours after eating? Here in the UK we are told to test levels after 1 hour for Gestational Diabetes (2 hours for other type of diabetes).

I think you should maybe get a second opinion, as those numbers seem ideal, also 6lbs is hardly any weight gain! :) i've put on nearly 30lbs xx

Your morning level is a bit on the high side, it should be under 5.5, which looks to be about 99 using that convertion site. But other than that it looks fine to me.

Before eating it should be under 5.5 and then 1 hour after eating under 7.8 which is 140.

Ill tell your doctor to get lost and find someone else. Insulin is the last resort and you dont need it at the moment. Its dangerous to go on it if you dont need it.

On the weight gain front of course less is best, but yours is fine. I put on about 14lbs in my first pregnancy with GD.

oh thanks for the converter lol! I was reading a couple of posts from women in the UK talking about their GD and I was like....i so don't understand these numbers lol :nope: I appreciate you finding one!

Yeah my doc told me 2 hrs after meals and at least 8 hrs for fasting sugars. He didn't say anything about a difference for different types, my mom and aunt both have type 2 and are supposed to test two hrs after meals as well.

Thanks for all the comments, I have talked to other pregnant military wives around here today and it seems we all have had the same problem with this specific doctor (the doctors are on rotation so you can see only him or any of the other doctors depending on your appt) He is very pushy about putting women on medicine that they may not need. As a "just in case" measure.

I would guess that each doctor has different standards... i know my doc says she wants my fasting sugars to be below 90. Then the other sugars between 90-110 but can go up to 120 and that would be OK.. mine BARELY leap above the 100 mark.. I think he wants to put you on the insulin because of your fasting sugar being a little too high for him..

I also have to check 2 hours after meals and not 1.. so it must be a US thing :) i dont know what to say about the weight gain.. in the 3 weeks since i was diagnosed i have lost 8 pounds (mind you i am not on the small side and that puts me -15 pounds since finding out i was pregnant)

I havent met with the dietician yet and will on tuesday but i think they are a waste.. with all you can find online honestly... I always start my morning out with honey nut cheerio's.. hehehe.. a fiber bar for snack (after i take my breakfast sugars) then usually a sandwich and cottage cheese and salad for lunch (on whole wheat bread of course) a fruit for a snack after taking my after dinner sugars and then supper... if im gonna have a "naughty" snack i make sure i have it after i take my sugars after supper... so my body has all night to process... just keep your head up!!! remember why your doing it!!
