Sorry about another GD thread, just a bit worried atm.

My blood sugar levels have started to drift all over the place and on Monday they told me not to worry about getting the odd high reading after a few 9+ readings

This morning I had two slices of wholemeal toast and it was 8.5 so I thought not to worry, that I'd have dinner later and make tea later as my OH is busy til late toinght anyway

So at 3pm I did my before dinner reading and it was down to 2.9!? is this dangerous? I've left a message on the diabetes nurse answer phone asking them to call me. I'm really concerned it'll have a negative affect on the baby. I noticed that she was really quiet before I ate, after I ate she's been REALLY active, I've never felt her move so much in a long while. :(

Any advice?

Also at all my appointments over the last few weeks(since i found out basically) they keep finding +2 ketones in my water and saying it means im not eating/drinking enough but im really trying and i cant eat without my sugar being ridiculous. Even when I do eat the ketones are there?

Didn't want to read and run :hugs:

Not sure about this one hun, I've not been told to test before meal times, although I did once a couple of weeks ago and my reading was 3.9.
Maybe if you've got +ketones, try eating little and often??

I think you need to keep trying to get hols of the diabetes nurse for more info.

Sorry I can't be of more help, hope you're ok xxxxxxxxx

I got my lowest reading last night of 3.3, but I was absolutely starving and ate later.

Did you fine? any shaking, sweating or generally feeling ill all of a sudden?

i get hypo symptoms as soon as my levels hit 4 and below. but only ever get this if i leave a large gap between meals. it effects people differently though.

it is really best to eat little and often. could you just have 1 piece of toast on waking, then the 2nd piece a few hours later? (there is no way i could get away with 2 pieces of toast in one go without getting a high, even tho i have big doses of insulin!) you could try swapping your wholemeal for granary or seedy bread and putting some cheese or eggs on your toast to fill you up and lower your levels.

oat cakes are good to nibble on between meals too. especially with a dollop of philladelphia or peanut butter on :winkwink:
also a bag of baked crisps, or an oaty cereal bar, nuts, yoghurt etc

:hugs:

I think your baby will be fine, if your sugar does go seriously low there is the chance of you going unconscious, which would then be abit dangerous but were you feeling okay in yourself?
I find i can't eat many carbs in the morning, the way i've been keeping my sugar level stable is by eating carbs with protein, eg piece of toast with scrambled egg/cheese/sausage, or pasta with chicken, it seems to balance it out abit.

I've also been having the ketone problem too, i find drinking loads of water seems to get rid of them x

That is a bit low, especially as you have GD, eat little and often to keep your levels mid range.

Toast and fruit will give you a quick boost.

:hugs:

Thanks everyone, after getting highs almost every morning I had cut down two pieces of toast to just one slice of toast with some scrambled egg on and it's really improved!

haven't had anything as low as 2.9 again, just the odd 3.8's

If you're getting problems with high sugar levels in the morning, then this can make your blood sugar plummet later (which in your case is what I suspect happened). I can't tolerate carbohydrate at all in the morning and try to ramp up my carb levels slowly by having bacon, egg, mushrooms and tomato for breakfast (about 9am) followed by a Muller Light yogurt about 10:30. That way, I don't get a peak and can have some potatoes at lunch without getting a sugar high. It's something worth bearing in mind if your body is OK with dairy and your sugars get too high in the morning as you progress further into the pregnancy.

Your body is at its most insulin resistant in the morning, which is why it's harder to balance sugars then. You could also try going for a short walk after meals (I do 10 min after breakfast and lunch (to reduce insulin resistance) and then 30-35 min after my evening meal (to keep fit and healthy).

I also eat plenty of protein-rich snacks between meals to help keep the ketones at bay. My daily snacks (meal times included for reference) look something like this:

9am breakfast
10:30am Muller Light yogurt
12:30 lunch
3pm Muller Light yogurt and 1 dsp of Whole Earth peanut butter (it doesn't have added sugar)
4pm 30g peanuts (yes they are safe in pregnancy according to the NHS guidelines)
5pm 2 slices of lean ham and 6 brazil nuts
7pm evening meal
9pm Muller Light yogurt and 1dsp Whole Earth peanut butter
10:30pm 30g walnuts and 2 slices of lean ham

I also drink at least 8-12 glasses of water or cups of herbal tea or caffiene free diet Coke or decaf coffee (not all the same drinks every day, I vary it), also to help keep the ketones at bay.

Baby' growth is normal, so I'm doing something right and I have managed to avoid insulin.

I hope your sugars are still OK. If you don't feel hypo then don't test before meals, it's only something else to worry about if you do.

Best of luck, I know that having GD can be a real pain!
