hi,i went for a growth scan yesterday at 31 wks and since i came out of there i feel awful cant stop crying. The sonographer said my baby is looking chubby and her tummy is measuring 3 weeks ahead.Im so worried about her now :cry:im blaming myself for having this stupid diabetes and making her organs have to work harder coz my stupid blood doesnt get rid of sugar properly. As im only 31 wks im so concerned as to how much more her tummy is going to get?? i feel so sorry for her and so guilty ,i am seeing the diabetes guy next tues to see if i need insulin or not he said if i have 3 readings above 8mmol this wk then i will be on it,i really am doing my best with this diet change i even lost 3 pound in a wk after i was diagnosed, getting abit scared as what to eat being veggie and not eating eggs is rather a pain..... sorry for rambling on! have any of you been told baby is measuring big???how are you coping?????xx

I'm so sorry to hear that! I hope everything goes well when you see the diabetes doctor. :hugs: I found out I don't have the diabetes but I'm 31 weeks and my baby girl is already 4lbs. They told me she's in the 70% tile and they told worry til they get in the 90% tile.

No advice but just wanted to offer a hug, I know how worrying babys growth is. My little one is only on the 8th centile - so tiny! The hospital told me it is better for them to be too big than too small xxx

:hugs: Its not your fault you have diabetes - its just something that mostly you have to deal with and your baby will sort herself out. I am a type 1 diabetic and it has taken me a long time to accept any of it (and I have been diabetic for 19 years) - it does suck. Your baby may be big and they will have to watch her sugars after she is born, but in general the effects of all this is very short lived and you will take home a healthy baby.

My last baby was 8 pounds 3 ounces at birth and this one is likely to be bigger. If you look on www.diabeticmommy.com many people have babies bigger than 10lbs and they also go on to do well. One warning: when your baby is born big because of diabetes they often do not grow on their usual growth curve and may not pick up weight like expected - I had this trouble with my DD and they kept telling me she was not picking up enough weight but she always looked healthy and while slim she was clearly doing well - just watch the number of wet nappies your child has each day.

The final thing: weight measurements by ultrasound and not terribly accurate - they were right with my DD but this is unusual - remember that whatever they tell you she weighs can be 25% inaccurate either way.

Just keep measuring your sugars and do the best you can to control them and keep them down. That is ALL you can do - so if you are doing that as best you can then you are doing a fantastic job.

Just popping in but wanted to let you now my story. i didnt have GD although was tested for it. By 30 weeks my little girl was measuring 3 weeks ahead and by 35 weeks was measuring 4 weeks ahead. She was born at 39 weeks by section due to breach and was a healthy 8lb9oz. So it may not even have anything to do with the GD. Also these scans are not always accurate. Have a chat with your Midwife or consulatant as your so worried .

thanks guys for your replies have another growth scan at 35 wks will keep you informed xx

Hi Hun
I know how you feel. I was only diagnosed a week ago and can't keep my sugars under control so going onto treatment next week. The deitician told me for some people simply cutting out sugars works , others need to watch carbs as well but even doing that I am struggling. Sending you :hugs: and remember it's not our fault x

Scans can be wayyyyy off...I was told all along that I would be having a 10-12 lbs baby due to my GD and growth scan...my little girl came 2 weeks early and a wee 7 lbs 2.5 oz when they told me the Friday before I had her (I had her on the following Friday) that she was 8 lbs 4 oz

Hi Ceri78,

Try not to worry Hon, but I do know exactly how you feel...sending you big hugs :hugs:

At my 33 week scan, my little one was measuring off the centile scale and you could even see little wrinkles of fat on the back of her neck. They estimated her weight to be 6.5lbs. Thats after having 4 weeks of trying to manage my GD with insulin.

After another crappy week last week, I am feeling much more positive this week.....remember this is not your fault. Your placenta hormones are stopping your insulin from working . This is nothing you have done and all you can do now is try to manage your sugars the best that you can, which is what you are doing.

You are doing the best you can and now your GD has been diagnosed you and bubs will be kept a close eye on.

Take care,

Bexy x x
