Just wondering if anybody else here got stuck with permanently impaired glucose tolerance after their baby was born? I was fine after baby 1, it went away, but after baby 2 my GTT test was no different (well actually it was worse) than during pregnancy.

If you have had this happen to you, what advice were you given and what sort of screening/treatment were you offered if any? And did it get worse in subsequent pregnancies?

I got a reading of 7.9 in pregnancy and 8.4 three months after delivery. I was told to lose 3 stone and go back for an annual fasting blood test. That seems a bit like they've just assumed I'll be getting type 2 diabetes shortly without them actually trying to do much about it :( Weren't the rules supposed to be changing to try to prevent the onset of proper diabetes with Metformin?

I had GD with my first son. Because my levels got very high towards the end, and I was over 35, and had a family history of diabetes, they told me that they didn't think it would go away after the baby was born. I was determined that it would, and surprisingly it did. It lasted almost two years. I was in a bit of a "borderline" state.

Since then, I have had full Type II diabetes. I went through a second pregnancy and of course I still have it. It sucks. But of course, there are worse things.

Thank you for your reply. It does unfortunately seem like family history plays a huge part in getting diabetes :-(

I have GD now with this pregnancy and I had it with my first as well. I was diagnosed earlier this time. I was told there is something like a 6% chance it will stay after delivery. I don't know if anything affects that chance such as weight age etc...

This time my sugars seem way more eratic than last time especially as my pregnancy progresses. They have to keep increasing my insulin even though I am religious about the diet they have set me. I weigh, measure, and count everything I put in my body and I mean EVERYTHING!

Because of this I have discussed with DH and we decided after this pregnancy we will use permanant birth control and grow our family later through adoption. It is just too much stress and worry.

What happens if sugars are never regulated exactly when baby is born? Mine go up and down and don't seem to be regulating even with the meds. They have scared me to death that I am hurting my baby. I don't know what else to do.

I'm 'glucose intolerant' now. But given no advice ... just told to go back in a year for another test. It means my life insurance has doubled, wish I'd gotten insurance before pregnancy.

If your sugars are not regulated it means 1- early induction, 2- potentially bigger baby, 3 - baby may have low blood sugar and may need feeding more often or some neonatal care to regulate blood sugar. You will have to stay in for tests to ensure baby is ok even if BS are under control - only a few hours though. I believe in most cases baby is absolutely fine x

I am being induced Tuesday. He measured 8lbs 9oz at my ultrasound yesterday. Also have excessive amniotic fluid. I am just ready for him to be here safe and sound. All this GD is stressing me out bad! :(

Do you know what percentile the baby's stomach measurement is? This seems to be my doctors main concern.

My baby was estimated at 6.5 at 35 weeks, which isn't terrible but the weight is mainly due to the stomach measurement which is 90th percentile (was 95th when they first diagnosed GD).

This seems to concern them mostly.

xx

Baby is here. Born Tuesday via C Section weighing in at 10lbs 5oz and 22 inches long. I was 37w4d.
He has been in NICU to regulate his sugars but is finally off IV glucose today. I nurse him every three hours and tomorrow he should move into room with me. If all stays on I'll have him home Saturday. :)

Congratulations! It must have been a worrying time but a wonderful result xx

My BS shot up PP. They kept telling me it was normal until I was sent to an endo for thyroid. He put me on Metformin and as far as I know I've been fine.

Mine never resolved and i now have type 1 diabetes. For those who don't have any risk factors for GD please request a test for Type 1 antibodies. I wondered why i had GD first time round, then i developed it with my second baby, after i gave birth it went away for 6 weeks then i ended up in A&E. x

It usually happens when someone is diagnosed as diabetic when the doctor/nurse isn't sure whether its type 1 or type 2 diabetes (in my case they tested me as i was close to underweight and i had no risk factors for GD or type 2). In type 1 diabetes there are autoantibodies present (which will show up in a blood test) here is a link with alot more info, the ones in the table is usually what they test for https://labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/diabetes-auto/tab/test

Leigh Anne! What a big beautiful baby! You are so fortunate to be breastfeeding! When my first was born his sugars were so low and he kept crashing and I just didn't have enough colostrum or milk to stabilize him.
Congratulations!

I had GD with my daughter and have felt off and 'sick' since having her, I finally went back to the doctors and had another GTT done 2 days ago and my levels are shocking :( they want me back in asap (Monday) to discuss it... I'm stressing big time about developing diabetes!

Congratulations sweetheart

I had GD with first pregnancy and my levels were fine immediately after labor. I have it again this time so I will wait and see. But, I was wondering what your levels were?

With my first pg my levels were between 150-210. This time I have 2 hr after meals range from 85-140 (avg 1teens) and fasting 103-133 (avg 1teens). They are putting me on 6 units of levemir at bedtime (I am almost 35 weeks). I am scared that it is so late in the pg.

I test 1 hour after meals, and am supposed to keep my levels below 7.8 (which is about 120 in the units you use I think). Fasting/pre meals should be below 5.5 (100 ish) but I don't have a problem with that, so I am diet controlled.

I'm guessing you need treatment because your fasting levels don't come down enough.
