Thanks Newky! I think an endocrinologist is a specialist in gland/hormones so looks at conditions such as diabetes. Thats what google told me anyway!

I keep forgetting about the evening snack - truth is I'm just not hungry before I go to bed. I suppose it takes a while to get into the swing of things.

Hi Ladies, This is the link to the NICE guidelines, the first part deals with pre-existing diabetes, then it moves onto gestational. It's fairly vague though, which is why I think each trust has their own procedures.

Thanks for the info Andrea, that's really helpful, i'm also struggling the most with snack ideas. I hate eating the same foods day in day out but trying to keep it varied is a challenge! So far I have been having fruit mid morning (apple/pear/plums) and in the afternoons a mullerlight yogurt, houmous and crudites or a couple of wholegrain crackers and low fat philadelphia. For supper I have been having a toasted fruit teacake which seems to work well, or a couple of rich tea.

Hey ladies. Sorry I didn't update earlier - was at the hospital for ages on Thursday and then went away for the weekend early on Friday.

It was all fine and very reassuring. Diabetes midwife showed me how to test blood sugar (don't know what I was stressing about), had bloods taken, saw the dietician and had bump and heartbeat checked - all fine. All my readings have been normal this weekend apart from one freak one on Friday morning. I had a bowl of shredded wheat and skimmed milk for breakfast and 1 hour later the reading was 13.8!!!! It really upset me and I thought I was never going to be able control it but I calmed down about it and everything has been great since. Hopefully it was just a blip at the beginning - no more shredded wheat though!

I have a growth scan tomorrow afternoon and another midwife appointment to check my weekend readings. Looking forward to seeing the little one and hoping it's tummy is measuring ok.

The other thing midwife said was that if I can diet-control they will let me go to 40-weeks but not over my due date. I can live with that.

That's great that your appointment went well and that they will let you go to 40 weeks I wouldn't worry about that high reading, I had an appointment this morning with the diabetic doctor and she said that the odd high reading isn't anything to worry about. I had had 3 over target highs in two weeks of monitoring and she was really pleased about that. Also saw the dietician who was pretty happy with everything as well, although she did tell me I needed to eat more regularly. I have been having a snack in between every meal but apparently that's not enough, I should try and eat every 2 hours!

Is anyone else spending an absolute fortune on food? I'm having to buy fresh fruit/veg/mullerlights every few days with all this snacking! x

Glad your appointment went well too Newky.

Had my growth scan yesterday and everything is great. Tummy is over the average line but within the 95/5 centile thing and most importantly in proportion to the head so they said its just a good-sized baby not big from the excess blood sugar - big relief, another scan in 4 weeks.

Diabetic consultant was happy with my diet-controlled monitoring (only a couple of high readings). She said it was a bit trial and error to start with and not to eat anything that gives me a high reading - so shredded wheat and tomato ketchup are off the menu!

I was told to eat more too - ketones in my urine sample so they made me go to the canteen and have a sandwich before they would let me home - oh the irony! It was all fine after that. I am finding the need to snack between meals - just not after dinner (dietician said that was ok).

Yep the food bills are going to rocket! I have to say though, I am feeling good - maybe the diet is having another positive effect.

Yeah I am finding that i'm adjusting to the snacking pretty well too, I think it's like anything, once you get into the routine it becomes normal. I must say I do actually look forward to my supper now as well, a toasted teacake and a cup of tea. I feel so middle aged! I have noticed that I don't feel the need to nap in the afternoons when i'm off work anymore, which I had got into the habit of doing. So I do think the change of diet has definetly boosted my energy levels. The smaller meals have eased my heartburn as well.

Glad your scan went well, I still haven't been booked in for mine. They reinterated yesterday that I MIGHT need a growth scan but then again I might not. Think they are only gonna book me in for one if the fundal height starts to measure big.

What are ketones, no one has mentioned these to me? x

Totally with you on the heartburn - haven't had it since I changed my diet.

I suppose the fundal height is a gauge for size of baby and if your blood sugar readings are ok then maybe a growth scan isn't necessary. Doesn't hurt to kick up a bit of a fuss though if you would really like one for piece of mind though hun.

They told me that ketones are where your body is accessing fat stores for energy i.e. you haven't eaten enough carbs. They happen when you go on carb-starvation diets like Atkins. A sandwich sorted me out though - they also said to drink more.
