gestational diabetes - given insulin and still high blood sugar readings?!

so i was given insulin yesterday because i cannot control my gd with diet alone. I started my first dose last night before dinner and my reading two hours after dinner shot up to 9.6!!!! what the hell?? i thought the insulin would help reduce my blood sugar but it has done the opposite. Ive never had a higher reading than 9.6 before so Im quite confused as to what has happened? Does insulin work immediately or does it need to be administered for a while for it to have any effect?

It depends what type of insulin you are on really if its a slow release it releases slowly is it only 1 needle a day?

im not sure what type of insulin it is but i have to use it twice a day, once before breakfast and once before dinner.

What are your latest readings? It might be a one off or you need to change the dose. You should call the diabetes team you are with to discuss it.

may just be that the dose is not enough yet, they started me on a low dose and gradually increased it but it's been stable for about the last 6 weeks now. You still need to eat with gd in mind aswell.

They started me on 5 units and my readings seem to be okay today (except this morning after I tried juice it was a bit high, but not sure if the insulin hadn't fully kicked in as I had the insulin shot and then breakfast right away). Is anyone else having an issue getting enough blood for a reading. I have the lancet set at 5 which is the deepest and I'm using my pinky, but I sill 1/2 the time don't get a big enough drop of blood and end up using 2-3 strips just to get one reading because the sample is too small.

Insulin will work right away if you are on the right dose. I have Type 1 Diabetes (diagnosed when I was 6 months pregnant with DD). It took some time and gradually increasing insulin units until we found the magic number. Talk to your team and learn how to tweak your doses yourself. Good luck. PM me if you have any questions
